About
Hot Snakes is an American rock band blending elements of post-hardcore, garage rock, and noise rock to create a raw, energetic sound. Originating in San Diego in the late 1990s, the band features the dynamic duo of John "Speedo" Reis (guitar) and Rick Froberg (vocals, guitar), who have a long history of collaboration in influential bands like Drive Like Jehu. The group also includes Gar Wood (bass) and Jason Kourkounis (drums), with Mario Rubalcaba having also played drums in the band. Known for their frenetic and uncompromising style, Hot Snakes have carved out a niche in the rock scene with their no-frills approach and high-octane performances.
How to Sound Like Hot Snakes
Hot Snakes’ sound is characterized by aggressive, gritty guitar tones and a relentless rhythmic drive. Their music often features tight, punchy riffs with a raw edge, achieved through the use of powerful amplifiers like the Marshall JCM800 2203 and Fender Deluxe Reverb. The interplay between Reis’s Fender Telecaster and Froberg’s guitar work creates a textured, layered sound that is both melodic and chaotic. The band’s use of effects pedals, such as the DOD FX22 Vibro Thang and EarthQuaker Devices Space Spiral, adds a psychedelic flair to their otherwise gritty soundscape. Drums and bass lock in with a ferocious intensity, underpinning the sonic assault with a propulsive energy that is both infectious and relentless.
