About
Immortal is a pioneering force in the black metal scene, hailing from Bergen, Norway. Formed in 1990 by Demonaz (guitars, later vocals) and Abbath (bass/vocals), the band quickly established themselves as a cornerstone of the genre with their early albums such as Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism and Pure Holocaust. Over the years, Immortal has become synonymous with the icy, relentless soundscapes characteristic of Norwegian black metal, while also incorporating elements of symphonic and pagan black metal into their work. The lineup has seen changes, most notably with Abbath's departure in 2015, but Demonaz continues to steer the band forward, maintaining their status as legends in the metal community.
How to Sound Like Immortal
Immortal's sound is a ferocious blend of raw aggression and epic atmospheres, characterized by fast-paced, tremolo-picked guitar riffs and thunderous drumming. Their music often evokes the vast, harsh landscapes of the Norwegian wilderness, with dark, melodic undertones that add depth to their relentless assault. Guitars like the Ibanez S520 are used to deliver cutting, precise tones, often driven through high-gain amplifiers like the Peavey 6505 and Marshall JCM 900. The use of distortion pedals such as the Boss MT-2 Metal Zone further enhances their aggressive sonic profile, making their sound both brutal and majestic.
