Mansun Members, Gear & Sound

Mansun was an English rock band originating from Chester in the mid-1990s, known for their eclectic blend of Britpop, rock, and Madchester influences. The band was formed by Paul Draper (vocals, guitar), who met Stove King (bass) at Wrexham Art College. They were later joined by Dominic Chad (lead guitar), with the lineup solidified by a rotating cast of drummers. Mansun stood out from their contemporaries with a distinct sound that combined the flamboyance of New Romanticism with the intensity of hard rock, earning them a dedicated following and critical acclaim in the UK, especially with their debut album Attack of the Grey Lantern.

Mansun's sound is characterized by its dark, grandiose atmosphere, blending aggressive guitar riffs with melodic, layered textures. The use of both solid body and semi-hollowbody guitars, such as the Fender Jaguar and Gibson ES-335, provides a versatile foundation for their dynamic range. Their music often incorporates rich, textural effects, with Dominic Chad employing devices like the Eventide DSP4000 UltraHarmonizer and the Pro Co The Rat for distortion, creating a sound that is both expansive and powerful.
