About

The Amps are an alternative rock band formed in Dayton, Ohio in 1994. The group was created by Kim Deal, known for her role in The Breeders, who took on guitar and vocals. She was joined by Jim MacPherson on drums, and local musicians Nathan Farley and Luis Lerma from The Tasties, handling guitar and bass respectively. The Amps' music captures the raw and unpolished energy of the 90s indie rock scene, infusing elements typical of the riot grrrl movement and lo-fi aesthetics. Although their time was brief, The Amps left an indelible mark with their sole album, Pacer.

How to Sound Like The Amps

The Amps' sound is characterized by its gritty, raw energy and lo-fi production quality, which creates an authentic and unrefined sonic landscape. Their music often features distorted guitar riffs and punchy rhythms, driven by Kim Deal's use of guitars like the 1958 Gibson Les Paul Goldtop and Fender 1962 Stratocaster. The grunge-inflected tones are further enhanced by the use of amplifiers such as the Peavey Classic 50, which adds tube-driven warmth and depth. The integration of analog elements, including the TASCAM 388 Recording Console, contributes to their signature lo-fi quality, creating a soundscape that is both nostalgic and vibrant, perfect for capturing the essence of 90s alternative rock.
