Helium emerged in the vibrant '90s alternative scene as a defining force in the riot grrrl and queercore movements, blending feminist themes with a versatile sound palette. Originating from Boston, the group was led by the talented Mary Timony (vocals, guitar), who brought her experimental prowess to the forefront, flanked by Shawn King Devlin (drums) and Ash Bowie (bass, after replacing Brian Dunton). Helium’s music spans genres from alternative pop to Boston rock, characterized by both searing rock energy and delicate, introspective melodies.
