About

The McCoys are an American rock band that emerged from Union City, Indiana, blending elements of pop rock, psychedelic rock, and garage rock. Formed in the mid-1960s, the group is best known for their chart-topping hit "Hang on Sloopy." The band originally consisted of Rick Derringer (lead vocals, lead guitar), Randy Jo Hobbs (bass guitar), Randy Zehringer (drums), and Ronnie Brandon (keyboard). As a young band, they captured the spirit of the era with their catchy melodies and rock-driven energy, making a significant impact on the music scene of the time.

How to Sound Like The McCoys

The McCoys' sound is characterized by energetic and straightforward rock riffs, often complemented by the raw, vibrant tones of Rick Derringer's guitar work. Their music features a garage rock grit that combines well with their pop sensibilities, creating a memorable and infectious vibe. Derringer frequently used a Gibson SG Standard and Gibson Les Paul Custom, known for their robust mid-range and sustain, which helped drive the band's powerful sound. The use of the Electro-Harmonix "Triangle" Big Muff Pi V1 fuzz pedal added a layer of fuzz-driven intensity, enhancing their rock edge. The rhythmic backbone provided by the bass and drums kept their sound tight and propulsive, making The McCoys' music an enduring staple of classic rock playlists.
