Rick Derringer's Gear
Rick Derringer frequently played a Gibson Explorer Electric Guitar during the 1970s. He used a rare edition featuring a V-shaped "split" headstock, with reportedly fewer than 16 ever made. This is evidenced by a user-uploaded photo.
In the 1973 performance of "Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo" with Edgar Winter, Rick Derringer is seen playing a Gibson SG Standard, highlighting its role as a key instrument in his early 70s lineup.
This is Rick's signature guitar made by Warrior Instruments. These guitars are amazingly good and the Rick Derringer signature of one of Warrior's coolest offerings. This guitar does it all fabulously. Rick can be seen playing these in various configurations in all his concerts these days.
at 0:04 you can see the custom diamond and the block inlays
Rick played these guitars quite often in the 70s and 80s. Rick endorsed these guitars as well as seen in the picture.
Derringer (Middle) can be clearly seen using a fender stratocaster that is in the HSS configuration.
Sold at the 1970 Winter's End Pop Festival, as reported secondhand on Kit Rae's Big Muff Pi Page's "Jimi Hendrix Big Muff" section.
An original Big Muff owner contacted me to verify he had acquired his V1 Big Muff from one of the members of The McCoys at the Orlando Pop Festival in May 1970. The McCoys were Randy Zehringer on drums, Randy Hobbs on bass, and Rick Derringer on guitar. The same Rick Derringer who jammed with Jimi regularly at the scene. That is just one of several accounts I have heard that indicates the Big Muff was being used by musicians in this period.
Rick Derringer was traded this Goldtop Les Paul Standard 1965 from fellow guitarist John Sebastian of the band The Loving Spoonful in exchange for a guitar amplifier. In this state, it came with a Bigsby vibrato tailpiece. In 1966, Rick decided to return the then-worn guitar to the Gibson factory to have it refinished in SG red and the Bigsby tailpiece uninstalled in favor of a standard stopbar tailpiece. Unhappy with the result, Rick sold the guitar to Dan Armstrong's guitar shop in New York, where Eric Clapton would purchase it the following week and gift it to George Harrison of the Beatles, who dubbed it "Lucy".

On the album artwork for Edgar Winter's White Trash "Roadwork," Rick Derringer is seen using his original Gibson ES-355, a guitar he purchased new at around age 16. It's said he bought it with advance money from The McCoy's hit "Hang On Sloopy."
