About

Montrose was a pioneering American rock band formed in 1973 by guitarist Ronnie Montrose after his tenure with artists like Van Morrison and the Edgar Winter Group. Known for their hard-hitting blend of rock, blues rock, and hard rock, the original lineup featured Sammy Hagar (vocals), Bill Church (bass), and Denny Carmassi (drums). Though their self-titled debut album didn't initially break into the Billboard Top 100, it gained a cult following and is considered one of the first true heavy metal albums by an American band. With tracks like "Space Station No. 5" and "Bad Motor Scooter," Montrose left an indelible mark on the rock genre, influencing countless bands that followed.

How to Sound Like Montrose

Montrose's sound is characterized by its raw, powerful guitar riffs and driving rhythms, capturing the spirit of 70s hard rock with a gritty edge. Ronnie Montrose's use of the Fender Stratocaster Electric Guitar, combined with the searing tones of the Electro-Harmonix Big Muff Pi fuzz pedal, produced a distinctive, overdriven sound that was both aggressive and melodic. This was complemented by the Fender 'Narrow Panel Tweed' Bandmaster amplifier, which added a warm, vintage tube tone to their music. The band's energetic and raw sound was further propelled by Sammy Hagar's powerful vocals and the tight, cohesive rhythm section, making Montrose a quintessential example of classic American rock.
