About
The Telescopes is an experimental British band renowned for their genre-blurring approach to music. Originating in 1987, the sole constant member is Stephen Lawrie, who serves as the band's composer and driving force. The lineup of The Telescopes is fluid, ranging from a single musician to an ensemble of up to 20 members, depending on the recording or performance. Their sound traverses an eclectic mix of space rock, noise pop, neo-psychedelia, and shoegaze, engaging listeners with its experimental and immersive qualities. Over the decades, The Telescopes have maintained a dynamic presence in the indie scene, releasing music with various labels, including the iconic Creation Records.
How to Sound Like The Telescopes
The Telescopes craft a soundscape that is both raw and expansive, balancing between aggressive textures and ethereal atmospheres. Their music often features fuzzy, overdriven guitars and ambient, swirling effects, creating a sonic tapestry that feels both chaotic and beautifully hypnotic. This distinctive sound can be partly attributed to Lawrie's use of gear such as the Silvertone 1448 and the Teisco Del Ray ET-200, which contribute to the band's gritty, lo-fi aesthetic. The Tech 21 SansAmp GT2 and Fender Red Knob 'The Twin' Amplifier further shape their sound, enhancing the band's ability to oscillate between dense, noise-laden passages and moments of introspective calm. This dynamic interplay is essential to capturing the essence of The Telescopes' ever-evolving musical journey.
