A/DA (short for Analog/Digital Associates) is an American electronics company founded in 1975 in Berkeley, California by engineer David Tarnowski, who had previously worked at Seamoon. The company made its name with the original A/DA Flanger, introduced in January 1978, a bucket-brigade stompbox widely regarded as one of the most advanced flangers of its era for its ability to approximate true tape flanging. Beyond the standard flanger controls, it included an even/odd harmonics switch and a threshold knob, and has since been reissued in both full-size and compact PBF formats.
A/DA expanded into guitar amplification and rack gear in the 1980s, most notably with the MP-1, a MIDI-programmable tube preamp released in 1987 that paired 12AX7 tubes with 128 program memories and became a staple of rack-based rigs during that decade. Other products in the catalog have included the Final Phase phaser, the GCS-5 guitar cabinet simulator/DI, and the Definition preamp/boost.
The brand is associated with the rack-era hard rock and progressive guitar sound, and the Flanger in particular has been linked with players such as Pat Travers and Adrian Belew. A/DA operates out of the United States and distributes its gear under the adaamps.com banner.
A/DA has 20 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Guitar Preamps, Flanger Effects Pedals, and Effects Processors. Their gear is featured by 53 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Electronic. Notable users include Les Claypool, Kenny Hickey, and Paul Gilbert.
