Binson was an Italian electronics manufacturer based in Milan, founded in the mid-1940s by Dr. Bonfiglio Bini. The company initially produced tube radios, televisions, and hi-fi equipment before branching into guitar amplifiers and, most famously, echo units. Binson is best known for the Echorec, a magnetic-drum delay introduced in the 1950s that used a rotating steel disc and multiple playback heads rather than tape, producing a warm, swirling multi-tap delay that became central to the sound of 1960s and 1970s rock.
The Echorec appeared in several variants, including the Echorec 2 (with the T5E and T7E designations), the Echorec Baby, and later transistorized models such as the PE 603. Binson also manufactured guitar and PA amplifiers, microphones, and mixers, though these products never achieved the same international profile as the delay units. The magnetic-drum design offered a lower noise floor and more stable repeats than tape-based rivals of the era, at the cost of complex mechanical servicing.
The Echorec became closely associated with players such as David Gilmour and the late Richard Wright of Pink Floyd, Hank Marvin of The Shadows, and Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin, who used one to treat drums on 'When the Levee Breaks.' Binson ceased operations in 1982, but original units remain prized on the vintage market, and the Echorec sound lives on through recreations and emulations from builders including T-Rex, Catalinbread, Pulsar Audio, and Audiority.
Binson has 9 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Effects Processors and Combo Guitar Amplifiers. Their gear is featured by 26 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Electronic, and Pop. Notable users include David Gilmour, Jack Antonoff, and Syd Barrett.
