Baldwin is an American brand best known in the music-gear world for a short-lived line of electric guitars, basses, and amplifiers produced in the late 1960s. The Baldwin Piano Company of Cincinnati, Ohio entered the fretted-instrument market in 1965 after being outbid by CBS for Fender, instead acquiring the British guitar maker Ormston Burns Ltd. for $380,000. Early Baldwin-branded instruments were essentially rebadged Burns designs — including versions of the Marvin, Double Six, Vibraslim, and Virginian — distributed through Baldwin's network of piano dealers.
In 1967 Baldwin introduced the 700 Series, a range of more affordable semi-hollow thinline electrics built in partnership with Italian maker Crucianelli, with bodies made in Italy and necks produced in the UK or at Baldwin's Fayetteville, Arkansas plant. Models included the 706 six-string, the 712 and 712T twelve-strings, and matching bass versions. The Italian-made pickups looked like humbuckers but were actually single coils, giving the instruments a jangly 1960s character. Also in 1967, Baldwin purchased Gretsch, and by the end of the decade it had wound down its own-branded guitar line to focus on the Gretsch range, with Baldwin guitar production ending in 1970.
Original Baldwin electrics are collectible vintage items today, associated with players such as Al Jardine of the Beach Boys. The instruments are noted for their Burns-derived styling, scrolled headstocks, and distinctive tonal character that ties them to British Invasion–era guitar sounds.
