Farfisa, short for Fabbriche Riunite di Fisarmoniche Italiane S.p.A. ("United Italian Accordion Factories"), was founded in 1946 in Osimo, Italy, through the merger of three accordion manufacturers: Settimio Soprani, Scandalli, and Frontalini. Originally producing up to 180 accordions per day, the company pivoted to electronic instruments in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The Combo Compact, introduced in 1964 as a direct competitor to the Vox Continental, became the instrument most associated with the Farfisa name and helped define the bright, buzzy combo organ sound of 1960s garage rock and pop.
Farfisa went on to produce a wide range of electronic keyboard instruments across several model lines, including the FAST series (using silicon transistors), the Professional series (designed to compete with Hammond organs), and the VIP series (featuring a pitch bend foot pedal). Later products included the Syntorchestra synthesizer, electronic pianos, and the Transicord electric accordion. At their peak in the late 1960s, Farfisa was the largest manufacturer of electronic instruments in Europe.
The Farfisa sound has appeared on recordings by Pink Floyd, Blondie, the B-52's, Sly Stone, Elton John, Philip Glass, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, Suicide, and Can, among many others. Production of combo organs ceased in 1982, and the Farfisa name lives on primarily through the vintage market and software emulations such as Arturia's Farfisa V plugin.
Farfisa has 47 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Organs, Synthesizers, and Keyboard Amplifiers. Their gear is featured by 98 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Electronic. Notable users include Richard Wright, John Paul Jones, and Sun Ra.
