Founded in Texas by effects designer Fred Bonte in 1993, Black Cat Pedals is one of the earliest boutique guitar effects companies in the United States. Bonte, who had previously designed products for Custom Audio Electronics (CAE) and worked closely with players like Eric Johnson, built a reputation for hand-wired, tonally responsive pedals. The original lineup — including the OD-1 "Freddie Fuzz," Super Fuzz, OD-Fuzz, Bass Octave Fuzz, and the Black Cat Vibe — earned a loyal following among professional guitarists. The company ceased production in late 2007 and was relaunched in 2009 from Foxon, Connecticut, with redesigned circuits, professional PCBs, and updated cosmetics while maintaining hand-built, true-bypass construction.
Black Cat is best known for fuzz and overdrive pedals. The OD-1, built around Analog Devices' OP275 op-amp, spans clean boost through saturated fuzz and is noted for its sensitivity to pick dynamics and guitar volume. The Super Fuzz is a take on the 1970s Univox Super Fuzz with an octave-doubling circuit, while the OD-Fuzz combines a silicon Fuzz Face with an overdrive in a dual-footswitch format. Other models include the N-Fuzz (featuring NPN transistors with adjustable bias), the Mini Trem (a tremolo/clean boost), and limited-run designs like the Bee Buzz. Artists associated with the brand include Billy Gibbons, Eric Johnson, J Mascis, Scott Henderson, Michael Landau, Steve Lukather, Beck, Trey Anastasio, and Lyle Workman.
