Founded in Texas by effects designer Fred Bonte in 1993, Black Cat Pedals is one of the earliest boutique guitar effects companies in the United States. Bonte, who had previously designed products for Custom Audio Electronics (CAE) and worked closely with players like Eric Johnson, built a reputation for hand-wired, tonally responsive pedals. The original lineup — including the OD-1 "Freddie Fuzz," Super Fuzz, OD-Fuzz, Bass Octave Fuzz, and the Black Cat Vibe — earned a loyal following among professional guitarists. The company ceased production in late 2007 and was relaunched in 2009 from Foxon, Connecticut, with redesigned circuits, professional PCBs, and updated cosmetics while maintaining hand-built, true-bypass construction.
