Buffalo FX was a boutique guitar effects pedal company founded and operated by Steve Painter, based in the French Pyrenees. Each pedal was hand-wired, assembled, tested, and screen-printed by Painter individually, giving the brand a reputation for meticulous craftsmanship in the boutique effects market.

The company built a dedicated following through its lineup of carefully voiced overdrive, distortion, fuzz, and modulation pedals. Many Buffalo FX designs draw inspiration from the tonal palette of David Gilmour, including the TD-X—Painter's interpretation of the BK Butler Tube Driver—and fuzz models based on classic Muff circuits, such as the Germanium Fuzz and the M-1, a stacked Ram's Head-style fuzz. The Patriot MKII offered a Civil War-style Big Muff voicing, while the Evolution delivered a range from light overdrive to full British-style tube amp distortion. The Carrera Overdrive served as a lower-gain option for clean and edge-of-breakup tones.

Buffalo FX also produced the Reticon R5106 Analog Flanger, built around a discontinued bucket-brigade chip central to some of the most revered flanging tones of the 1970s. The brand attracted a following among Gilmour-inspired guitarists and boutique pedal enthusiasts, and its pedals remain sought after on the secondary market.
