Vemuram is a Japanese boutique effects pedal maker founded in 2008 by Masaki Uemura and engineer Mr. Tezuka, operating under Tri-Sound Inc. in Tokyo. The brand name originated from a mispronunciation of Uemura's surname during his time overseas, combined with the "M" from his first name. Every Vemuram pedal is hand-built with solid brass enclosures — chosen for their superior electromagnetic shielding — and each unit features an internal trimmer that lets players fine-tune the gain range to match their specific pickups and amp setup.
Vemuram's flagship pedal is the Jan Ray, a low-gain overdrive inspired by 1960s Blackface Fender amp tones that has become one of the most respected transparent drive pedals among professional guitarists. The lineup spans a wide range of drive and fuzz circuits, including the Galea (tweed-style overdrive), the Karen (Marshall JMP/JCM-style drive), the Budi (clean boost), and several signature collaborations. Producer and guitarist John Shanks has co-developed multiple pedals with the brand, including the Shanks ODS-1 (inspired by the Nobels ODR-1), the Shanks 3K, and the Shanks 4K. Guitarist Oz Noy has a signature silicon fuzz (the Oz), while Josh Smith collaborated on the Myriad Fuzz, a hybrid germanium/silicon design. Vemuram also partnered with Ibanez on the TSV808, a Tube Screamer variant.
The brand built its reputation largely through word of mouth among session musicians and professional players, particularly in New York and Los Angeles. Notable users include Michael Landau, Scott Henderson, Pete Thorn, Matt Schofield, Mateus Asato, Tim Pierce, Ariel Posen, Yvette Young, and Brad Whitford.
Vemuram has 17 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Overdrive Effects Pedals, Fuzz Effects Pedals, and Boost Effects Pedals. Their gear is featured by 64 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Blues, and Pop. Notable users include Michael Landau, Gary Clark Jr, and Joey Landreth. Most Vemuram products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
