KingTone Guitar is a boutique pedal company founded in 1999 by Jesse Davey, a British blues guitarist and electronics tinkerer who co-founded the award-winning British blues band The Hoax in 1991. Davey's fascination with electronics began at age eight in his father's workshop, and at sixteen he apprenticed under legendary British amplifier builder Brian Jefferys. After The Hoax disbanded, Davey channeled his dual expertise as a musician and circuit designer into building handcrafted effects pedals. The company, run as a family business by Jesse and his wife Krystal, is based in Los Angeles, California.
KingTone's flagship product is The Duellist, a dual-overdrive pedal that pairs two modified circuits — one based on the Tube Screamer and the other on the Marshall Bluesbreaker — into a single enclosure with extensive stacking options. The two sides of The Duellist have also been released as standalone pedals: The Soloist (the Bluesbreaker-inspired String-Singer side) and the HeavyHand (the Tube Screamer-inspired side). The lineup also includes the Blues Power transparent overdrive, the miniFUZZ (available in silicon and germanium versions), the Vintage Fuzz, The 1968 vibe pedal, The Octaland octave fuzz, the RISE, and the KingTone Wah, along with guitar pickups and utility products like buffers and switchers.
KingTone pedals are used by blues and blues-rock guitarists including Kirk Fletcher, Josh Smith, Joey Landreth, Philip Sayce, Ariel Posen, and Artur Menezes. Every pedal is hand-built in California and designed to deliver highly interactive, touch-sensitive analog drive and fuzz tones.
King Tone has 20 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Fuzz Effects Pedals, Overdrive Effects Pedals, and Miscellaneous Guitar Parts. Their gear is featured by 26 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Blues, and Folk, World, & Country. Notable users include Joey Landreth, Ariel Posen, and Ángel Parra. Most King Tone products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
