Burl Audio is a professional audio equipment manufacturer based in Santa Cruz, California, founded in 2006 by Rich Williams. Williams studied computer engineering at UC Santa Cruz before working in Silicon Valley, then pivoted to audio engineering, establishing Paradise Recording studio in the Santa Cruz mountains. He went on to work for E-MU Systems and Universal Audio, where he designed the 2192 converter, before launching Burl Audio with the goal of providing high-end recording devices in modular, outboard units accessible to engineers at all levels.
The company is best known for its analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters, particularly the B2 Bomber ADC and DAC and the B80 Mothership, a flagship modular converter chassis that accepts interchangeable daughter cards for mic preamps, AD/DA conversion, and AES connectivity, with support for Digilink, Dante, MADI, and SoundGrid protocols. The B16 Mothership offers a 16-channel version of the same modular architecture. Beyond converters, Burl Audio manufactures the B26 ORCA control room monitor, the B32 Vancouver mix bus, the B1 and B1D 500-series mic preamps, and the BC5000 Bigfoot optical compressor.
Burl Audio gear has earned a strong reputation in professional studios and is used by acclaimed engineers and producers including Vance Powell, Ryan Hewitt, Eddie Kramer, Michael Wagener, Mike Crossey, and Michael Brauer across a wide range of genres from rock and country to pop and R&B.
