Crane Song is a boutique professional audio manufacturer based in Superior, Wisconsin, founded in 1995 by Dave Hill. Before starting Crane Song, Hill designed an acclaimed line of tube processors for Summit Audio, including the TLA-100 compressor and TPA-200B preamp. He launched Crane Song with the STC-8, a two-channel discrete Class-A compressor/limiter, and went on to develop a range of highly regarded hardware for recording, mixing, and mastering studios. The company's name was inspired by the sounds of construction cranes working on a nearby bridge.
Crane Song's product line spans analog and digital domains. Key hardware includes the HEDD (Harmonically Enhanced Digital Device) and its successor the HEDD Quantum AD/DA converter, the Flamingo stereo mic preamp, the Trakker compressor, the Spider eight-channel mic preamp and A/D converter, the Avocet IIA monitor controller, the Ibis stereo analog equalizer, and the Solaris mastering DAC. The company also produces 500-series modules — the Syren tube mic preamp, Falcon tube compressor, and Insigna tube EQ. On the software side, Crane Song developed the Phoenix plug-in suite for Pro Tools, which emulates analog tape saturation characteristics, and Hill collaborated with Avid on the HEAT (Harmonically Enhanced Algorithm Technology) feature for the Pro Tools mixer.
Crane Song gear is found in top recording, mixing, and mastering facilities worldwide, valued by engineers for its combination of analog warmth with precise digital engineering. Hill was inducted into the TEC Award's TECnology Hall of Fame in 2020.
