Description

The Burl Audio B1 Mic Pre / DI is a powerhouse in a compact form. It's built on the popular API 500 series format and is designed to work seamlessly with the B2 Bomber ADC, offering you an unparalleled multi-channel experience. The B1 is kitted out with the proprietary BX3 input transformer and BX2 output transformer, ensuring that your sound is not just warm, but also clear and deep. With the B1, you'll enjoy an all-discrete transistor, class-A, direct coupled, capacitor free circuit path, which delivers a punch that's hard to match. Whether you're recording drums, guitars, or vocals, the B1 has got you covered.

The B1 offers both Gain and Level controls, allowing you to manipulate your tone to your liking. If you're after a heavy, tone, simply crank up the stepped gain control and offset that with the level control. For a cleaner tone, turn the gain down and crank up the level. The B1 is also equipped with a transformer coupled impedance select, making it a perfect match for ribbon mics and other low impedance sources.

Critic Reviews

Burl Audio: B1 & B1D 500-series mic preamps | Tape Op Magazine | Longform candid interviews with music producers and audio engineers covering mixing, mastering, recording and music production.

tapeop.com

Burl Audio’s B1 and B1D mic preamps deliver solid construction and rich, versatile tones that enhance any recording session. The B1D shines with its warm, extended low end, making it a favorite for drums and guitars, while the B1 offers a cooler, more pristine sound ideal for vocals and acoustic instruments. However, the B1's tighter low end may not satisfy those seeking a meatier response, and the differences between the two can be subtle. Overall, these preamps are highly recommended for any producer looking to add quality and character to their sound, but the choice between them boils down to personal taste.

Transformers

This pre does beautiful things to low frequency content, and smooths out the top end of anything in a really delightful way. So much clean gain it’s silly. The gain staging allows you to dial in as much or as little of the transformers as you like, to flavour it the way you want.

Amazing things happen with proximity effect dynamic mics. More than suitable clean gain for speech through low sensitivity dynamics too. Condensers are also lovely; my AKG 451’s sing in a way I’ve not experienced before.

A really under-appreciated rarity. Could give any of the very top mic pres a run for their money.

The B1D uses an iron transformer rather than the nickel in the B1. This gives it a darker character and supposedly delivers even more lush harmonics on bass content.
