Founded in 1983 by Dave Dunwoodie in Vancouver, Canada, Graph Tech Guitar Labs is the world's largest manufacturer of guitar nuts, saddles, and bridge pins. The company began when Dunwoodie, frustrated by string binding on a Fender Stratocaster tremolo during a live performance, started experimenting with composite materials on his kitchen table. He engineered the world's first self-lubricating guitar nut — a formula 500% more slippery than graphite — and borrowed $5,000 to produce his first injection mold. The company is headquartered in Delta, British Columbia.
Graph Tech's flagship material, TUSQ, is a synthetic ivory engineered from organic polymers under extreme heat and pressure. Unlike natural bone or ivory, TUSQ eliminates the inconsistencies caused by grain variations, producing even string-to-string response. The TUSQ line includes nuts, saddles, bridge pins, and picks, with variants like TUSQ XL (enhanced lubrication for tremolo stability) and Black TUSQ XL. Beyond TUSQ, Graph Tech manufactures String Saver Saddles (designed to reduce string breakage), Ratio machine heads (geared so each tuner turns at a ratio matched to its string gauge), Ghost acoustic pickup systems, and ResoMax bridges for tune-o-matic and wrap-around configurations.
Graph Tech holds over 65 patents and trademarks worldwide, and its components come factory-installed on instruments from more than 180 brands, including Fender, Gibson, Martin, Taylor, Ibanez, Yamaha, and Warwick. The company operates in over 42 countries, supplying both large OEM manufacturers and individual players looking to upgrade their instruments.
