Founded in 1960 by Masao Gotoh in Isesaki, Gunma, Japan, Gotoh Gut Co., Ltd. is the only domestic machine head manufacturer in Japan. The company's roots trace back to 1950, when Gotoh began manufacturing violin strings and related gut products before expanding into comprehensive stringed instrument hardware. Gotoh supplies tuning machines, bridges, tailpieces, and tremolo units for guitars, basses, ukuleles, mandolins, and banjos, serving as an OEM partner for major manufacturers including Yamaha, Takamine, ESP, Tokai, and Fernandes.
Gotoh is best known for its 510 series of tuning machines, which feature proprietary technologies like the Magnum Lock locking system and HAP (Height-Adjustable Post) mechanism — combined in the acclaimed HAPM tuners that allow both string locking and post height adjustment. The company's tremolo offerings include the 510T series, designed with chromium molybdenum steel knife edges for tuning stability, as well as licensed Floyd Rose locking tremolos such as the GE1996T, widely regarded as one of the finest licensed Floyd Rose units available. Gotoh also produces bridges and hardware under the Wilkinson by Gotoh line through a licensing agreement established in 1998.
All Gotoh products are manufactured in-house in Japan. The company does not sell directly to consumers; instead, its hardware is distributed through retailers, dealers, and instrument manufacturers worldwide. Technologies like Lubri-Coat friction reduction, X-Finish corrosion resistance, and Rock Solid post stabilization appear across the product line, and the brand is a standard choice among professional luthiers and custom guitar builders.
Gotoh has 36 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Tuning Machine Heads, Guitar Bridges and Tailpieces, and Electric Guitar Pickups. Their gear is featured by 7 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Reggae. Notable users include Andra Ramadhan, Mick Mars, and Richard Zven Kruspe. Most Gotoh products sit on the budget-friendly end of the spectrum.
