H.S. Anderson is a Japanese guitar brand launched in 1973 as a high-end custom shop line by Moridaira, the Nagano-based instrument maker behind Morris Guitars. The brand takes its name from the initials of its designer, Shiino Hidesato, who conceived it as a professional-grade alternative to the era's common copy models aimed at the domestic Japanese market.
The brand is defined almost entirely by one instrument: the Mad Cat, a Telecaster-shaped solidbody with an unmistakable laminated body of walnut center strip, sen ash sides, and tiger-striped maple top and bottom, finished with a distinctive leopard-print pickguard and loaded with Heartbreaker-designed pickups and Gotoh hardware. Roughly 500 Mad Cats were built during the 1970s, including a small OEM batch branded for Hohner USA; the rights were eventually licensed to Hohner in Germany, which continued production in Japan under the Hohner name while retaining the H.S. font.
The Mad Cat gained cult status after Prince adopted one early in his career and used it extensively throughout his live shows and studio work. Moridaira revived the brand as the H.S. Anderson Vintage Reissue Mad Cat, hand-building a handful of instruments per month at the original factory to the MkI specification, alongside later MkII variations. Its catalog has historically included other models such as the HS-2 bass and various solidbody designs, but the Mad Cat remains the brand's defining product.
H.S. Anderson has 8 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars and Electric Basses. Their gear is featured by 2 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Funk / Soul. Notable users include Joan Jett and Hiroshi Kamayatsu.
