John Hornby Skewes & Co. is a British musical instrument distributor founded in 1965 by John Hornby Skewes and his wife Madge from their home in Garforth, near Leeds, England. What began as a small accessories operation grew into one of the UK's largest independent trade distributors of musical instruments and equipment, operating from a purpose-built warehouse and office complex near junction 47 of the M1 motorway. The company distributes over 70 industry brands across categories including guitars, basses, amplifiers, keyboards, live sound, percussion, and orchestral instruments.
In the mid-to-late 1960s, Hornby Skewes produced a line of guitar effects pedals that have since achieved cult status among collectors. The Zonk Machine, a germanium fuzz pedal inspired by the Tone Bender MKI circuit, debuted around 1965–66 and was used by artists including Mani Neumeier of Guru Guru and Canadian bands Warpig and The Plastic Cloud. The Shatterbox combined the company's Treble Booster with the Zonk II fuzz into an early multi-effects unit and was notably used by Marc Bolan of T. Rex.
Beyond distribution, JHS owns several proprietary brands. Vintage, established in 1995 in collaboration with hardware designer Trevor Wilkinson, produces affordable electric, acoustic, and bass guitars — with the V75, V6H, and V100 among its best sellers and signature models created for artists like Midge Ure and Jerry Donahue. Fret-King, also developed with Wilkinson, offers guitars with innovative hardware designs. Other in-house brands include Encore (entry-level guitars), Santos Martinez and Vintage Laka (fretted instruments), Antoni (orchestral strings), Odyssey (brass and woodwind), Kinsman (accessories), and KAM (audio and lighting equipment).
