Also known as: Gibson Kalamazoo
UnclaimedKalamazoo was a budget instrument line produced by Gibson out of its factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. The name first appeared in 1933 when Gibson launched a lower-priced range to keep the company afloat during the Great Depression, covering flat-top and archtop acoustic guitars, lap steels, mandolins, and banjos. That original run continued until 1942, when wartime production halted the line.

The Kalamazoo badge returned in the 1960s during the electric guitar boom, this time applied to solid-body electric guitars and basses such as the KG-1, KG-2, and KB bass. These were assembled at Gibson's old electronics plant in Kalamazoo rather than the main Parsons Street factory, and were aimed at student and beginner players with simplified hardware and pickups. Production of the electric line ran through the late 1960s.
Kalamazoo instruments are no longer made, but they have a dedicated following in the vintage market, valued for their connection to Gibson's classic Kalamazoo-era craftsmanship at a more accessible price point. The Gibson Kalamazoo factory itself closed in 1984, with several former employees going on to found Heritage Guitars in the same building.
