Washburn is one of America's longest-running guitar makers, tracing its origins to 1883 in Chicago, Illinois, where the Lyon & Healy company began producing stringed instruments under the Washburn name. By 1889 the company had grown to become the largest mandolin maker in the United States, and in 1912 it introduced the Lakeside Jumbo, an instrument considered among the earliest dreadnought-sized acoustic guitars—a design that would go on to define much of modern acoustic guitar building.
The brand produces a wide range of instruments spanning acoustic guitars, electric guitars, bass guitars, mandolins, banjos, and ukuleles. Among its historically significant releases was the 1930s Solo Deluxe, an early auditorium-style guitar developed following a merger with Tonk Brothers, and the Festival series of the 1980s and 1990s, which became closely associated with the acoustic unplugged performance era. On the electric side, Washburn introduced the Wing series in the 1970s and has since developed a catalog of metal- and rock-influenced models favored by hard rock players.
Washburn has built signature models for a number of prominent guitarists, including Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme—whose N4 model became one of the brand's most recognized instruments—as well as Paul Stanley of KISS, Dimebag Darrell of Pantera, Dan Donegan of Disturbed, and Warren Haynes.
Washburn has 456 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars, Acoustic-Electric Guitars, and Electric Basses. Their gear is featured by 188 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Pop. Notable users include Dimebag Darrell, Ola Englund, and Nuno Bettencourt. Washburn's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
