La Bella is a string manufacturer based in Newburgh, New York, operated under the parent company E. & O. Mari, Inc. The Mari family's string-making roots trace back to 17th-century Salle, a town in Italy's Abruzzi region that was a European center for gut-string production, and family lore holds that the Maris supplied strings to luthiers including Amati and Stradivari. Brothers Emilio and Olinto Mari emigrated to New York City in the early 20th century and opened their first American factory on Fifth Avenue in 1914, later trademarking the La Bella name for their line of orchestral gut strings.
The company produces a broad catalog that spans electric, acoustic, and bass guitar strings as well as classical and flamenco guitar, ukulele, banjo, mandolin, violin, viola, cello, double bass, lute, and early-instrument strings. La Bella is particularly associated with flatwound bass strings — including the 1954 Original flats favored by vintage-style players — and with its long-running classical guitar lines. The company also builds Olinto bass guitars, a boutique instrument line named for co-founder Olinto Mari, and offers signature sets developed with artists such as Tony Iommi.
La Bella strings have been used by a range of players across genres, including Ron Carter, Chuck Rainey, Thundercat, Willie Nelson, Pepe Romero, the Gipsy Kings, Gilberto Gil, Tony Iommi, and Bryan Adams. The Newburgh facility remains the sole manufacturing site for the brand's strings, and the company promotes itself as one of the oldest continuously family-owned string makers still in operation.
La Bella has 62 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Strings, Mandolin Accessories, and Fuzz Effects Pedals. Their gear is featured by 35 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Funk / Soul, and Pop. Notable users include Tony Iommi, Thundercat, and Allan Holdsworth.
