Orville by Gibson was a line of Gibson-licensed guitars produced for the Japanese market between 1988 and 1998. The brand was created by Gibson Guitar Corporation and distributor Yamano Gakki as a response to the flood of high-quality Gibson copies coming out of Japanese makers like Tokai, Burny, and Greco during the 1970s and 1980s. Rather than extend the Epiphone name, Gibson chose "Orville" — after founder Orville Gibson — and positioned the line between American-made Gibsons and Korean-made Epiphones in price.
The guitars were built in Japan by the Terada and Fuji-Gen factories, with Terada handling most of the semi-hollow and archtop models while Fuji-Gen focused on solidbodies. The catalog centered on faithful reproductions of classic Gibson designs, including Les Paul Standards and Customs, SGs, Flying Vs, Explorers, ES-335s, and ES-175s. A companion "Orville" line (without the "by Gibson" suffix) used more affordable materials and hardware, while "Orville by Gibson" instruments typically featured higher-grade woods, USA-made pickups on many models, and closer adherence to vintage Gibson specs.
Production ended in 1998 when Gibson and Yamano Gakki restructured their Japanese offerings around an expanded Epiphone Japan range that absorbed both solidbody and semi-acoustic models. Orville by Gibson guitars have since become sought-after on the vintage and used market, particularly among players who value the build quality of Japanese lawsuit-era craftsmanship applied to officially licensed Gibson designs.
