Gibson Custom is the high-end division of Gibson Guitar Corporation, operating primarily out of Nashville, Tennessee, dedicated to building collector-grade electric guitars by hand. The division was formally established in October 1993 — shortly after the debut of the first Historic Les Paul Reissue at NAMM that year — and has since become Gibson's home for limited-run reissues, artist signature instruments, and one-off custom orders.
The division is best known for its Historic Collection, which faithfully reproduces the construction details, aged hardware, and wood specifications of Gibson's most sought-after vintage instruments, particularly the late-1950s Les Paul Standards and 1960s SGs, ES-335s, and Flying Vs. Other notable lines include the Vintage Original Spec (VOS) series — which applies an aged finish treatment to historic-spec guitars — and the Murphy Lab aged collection, which offers relic treatments ranging from light to ultra-heavy aging.
Gibson Custom is also responsible for all of Gibson's artist signature models, collaborating closely with musicians to reproduce the individual quirks of their personal instruments. Signature models have been produced for artists including Jimmy Page, Slash, Billy Gibbons, Joe Perry, and Gary Moore, among many others. Each instrument is hand-built by skilled luthiers using tonewoods and finishing techniques drawn from Gibson's most revered production eras.
Gibson Custom has 336 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Solid Body Electric Guitars, Semi-Hollowbody Electric Guitars, and Hollowbody Electric Guitars. Their gear is featured by 334 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Pop, and Folk, World, & Country. Notable users include Slash, Joe Hottinger, and Billie Joe Armstrong. Most Gibson Custom products sit firmly in the high-end, boutique range.
