Founded in 1948 by Richard Peterson in Chicago, Peterson Electro-Musical Products is a family-owned company headquartered in Alsip, Illinois, with a manufacturing facility near Hoopeston, Illinois. While the company also produces electronic control systems for pipe organs, Peterson is best known in the music world for pioneering strobe tuner technology. The company developed the first commercially available handheld, battery-operated tuner (the Model 70, introduced in 1964) and the landmark Model 400 strobe tuner in 1967, establishing a standard for tuning precision that the brand has maintained ever since.
Peterson's tuner lineup spans mechanical strobe tuners like the AutoStrobe 490 and 590, LCD-based strobe pedal tuners such as the StroboStomp HD and StroboStomp Mini, clip-on models like the StroboClip HD, and bench/desk units like the StroboPLUS HDC. The company also offers tuning software for iOS and Android. All Peterson strobe tuners deliver accuracy to within 0.1 cent — far beyond what standard chromatic tuners achieve. A signature feature across the product line is Sweetened Tunings, a proprietary system of over 100 tuning presets designed to compensate for inherent intonation problems in specific instruments and playing styles. Run by Scott Peterson, son of the founder, the company remains an industry reference for precision tuning among guitar techs, luthiers, and studio professionals.
