Rio Grande Pickups is a Houston, Texas-based manufacturer of electric guitar and bass pickups, founded in 1993 by David Wintz and Bart Wittrock. The pair had previously opened the vintage guitar shop Rockin' Robin in Houston in 1972 and launched Robin Guitars in 1982. Rio Grande grew out of demand from players who wanted hotter, more aggressive output than traditional vintage-style pickups could deliver, and the company built its identity around a marketing tagline of "Hot Texas Tone."
The catalog spans well over a hundred models covering Stratocaster, Telecaster, P-90, and humbucker formats for guitar, plus J-Bass, P-Bass, and humbucking variants for bass. Well-known models include the Muy Grande, BBQ, Texas, Bluesbar, Jazzbar, Punchbox, Pitbull, Crunchbox, and the Powerbucker bass humbucker. The pickups are wound in-house and offered in a range of output levels, from vintage-leaning sets to high-output rock and metal designs.
The Rio Grande artist list spans multiple genres and includes Billy Gibbons and Dusty Hill of ZZ Top, Rudolph Schenker of Scorpions, J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr., Al Jourgensen of Ministry, Matt Bellamy of Muse, and Peter Hayes of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, among many others.
