DiMarzio is an American manufacturer based in Staten Island, New York, best known for pioneering the direct-replacement aftermarket guitar pickup. Founded by Larry DiMarzio in 1972, the company grew out of his work repairing guitars for professional musicians during a period when major instrument manufacturers had been acquired by larger corporations and were cutting costs on component quality. DiMarzio's response was to build pickups that outperformed stock units and sell them directly to players looking to upgrade their instruments.

The company's first major product, the Super Distortion humbucker, combined a ceramic magnet with smaller-gauge wire wound to higher output, giving rock guitarists heavier tones without relying on fuzz pedals.
