Seymour W. Duncan began winding pickups as a teenager in New Jersey, improvising tools to rewind a broken Telecaster pickup and discovering that his technique produced a noticeably different tone. He later worked as a guitar technician in London, where he serviced instruments for prominent guitarists of the era, before returning to the United States. In 1976, Duncan and Cathy Carter Duncan formally established the company in Santa Barbara, California, starting from a 12-by-15-foot workshop that offered pickup rewinding services before expanding into original designs.
The company built its reputation on handcrafted passive pickups for guitar and bass. The SH-4 "JB Model" humbucker, which traces its origins to a custom pickup Duncan wound for Jeff Beck, became one of the best-selling aftermarket pickups ever made. Other landmark products include the Antiquity series of vintage-aged pickups, the Stack and Hot Rails (hum-canceling single-coil-sized designs), and the Blackouts, a hybrid active pickup line introduced in 2006. For several decades, bass pickups were marketed under the "Basslines" name before being unified under the main Seymour Duncan brand. The company has also produced a value-oriented "Duncan Designed" line for mid-tier instruments and expanded into effects pedals and compact amplifiers with the PowerStage series.
Seymour Duncan has developed signature pickups in collaboration with artists including Dimebag Darrell (SH-13 "Dimebucker") and George Lynch (SH-12 "Screamin' Demon"), and their pickups have been used by players across rock, metal, and beyond. The company maintains an active user community through its long-running online forum and annual Users' Group gatherings, and continues to manufacture in its Santa Barbara-area facility.
