Slate Digital is a Los Angeles-based audio software company founded in 2008 by Steven Slate and Fabrice Gabriel. The pair met at an AES convention and bonded over a shared concern about loudness processing destroying the dynamic range of music, which led to their debut product, the FG-X Mastering Processor. The plugin earned multiple industry awards and established Slate Digital as a serious player in professional audio software.
The company built its reputation on painstakingly accurate digital emulations of classic analog studio hardware. The Virtual Console Collection (VCC) models six iconic mixing consoles, while Virtual Tape Machines (VTM) recreates the sonic characteristics of 2-inch and half-inch tape decks. The Virtual Mix Rack (VMR) serves as a modular channel strip framework where users can load various EQ, compressor, and saturation modules inspired by vintage hardware. Other notable products include the Infinity EQ, Fresh Air (a free high-frequency enhancer), and the ML-1A and ML-2A modeling microphones paired with the Virtual Microphone System (VMS), which uses modeling technology to emulate a wide range of classic microphones through a single hardware mic.
Slate Digital offers a Complete Access subscription that bundles over 150 plugins — including titles from Solid State Logic and Harrison Audio — alongside sample libraries and educational content through Slate Academy. The company is part of the Audiotonix group of professional audio brands. Note: Slate Digital is a separate entity from Steven Slate Audio, which focuses on drum samples and headphone monitoring systems.
Slate Digital has 55 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Compressor Plugins, EQ Plugins, and Condenser Microphones. Their gear is featured by 58 artists, with the strongest followings in Electronic, Pop, and Rock. Notable users include Alex Tumay, Ken Andrews, and Adam Nolly Getgood.
