drey_andersson reviewed Novation Launch Control XL 3 MIDI Control Surface
about 1 month ago
Best midi controller to control your software synths and maybe even some hardware
Eight faders, 24 knobs, buttons across the bottom. That's the whole pitch and it's why this thing is the best way to get a hardware feel out of softsynths. Stop mousing parameters, put your hands on actual controls, and the plugin starts behaving like a real instrument.
The endless encoders deserve a special mention. They feel weirdly analog. If they weren't endless I'd swear I was turning Alpha pots. Smooth, weighted, no plastic wobble. Good job Novation. MK3 finally adds an OLED display, which sounds like a small thing until you use it. You see what you're tweaking instead of guessing or staring at the screen. The MIDI out is the other big upgrade. Same surface drives your VSTs or your hardware, your call.
Only real competition I can think of is the SHIK S32 (three times the price) or Neuzeit The Drop (four times the price), and both are aimed more at modular folks anyway. If you live in the MIDI CC world with softsynths and outboard, nothing else gives you this much control for the money.
Best bang for the buck, period.

Probably the best mini keys you'll get out there
Upgraded from the smaller KeyStep and should've done it sooner. I can voice my own chords just fine, but the chord generator and strum feature are genuinely useful for sketching ideas fast. Strum gives you actual articulation instead of a flat block chord, sounds like a played part rather than five notes hitting at once.
The mini keys feel solid. Real travel, consistent across the bed, best mini-key action I've owned. And aftertouch on mini keys is basically unheard of, so that alone is wild for the price.
Lives in my backpack because it talks to everything. I bring it along when I'm in other studios with my Mayer Vibes MD850, and at home it drives my modular via CV and gate. Pitch, velocity, mod, clock out, all there. Best mini keyboard for a backpack right now. Get it.

klender reviewed Ibanez Talman TMB30 Bass
about 1 month ago
The Ibanez TMB30 was my main bass for 2.5 years, I just recently upgraded to a five string jazz bass.
First of all, it is pretty tiny. Cute even, when compared to a full size bass.
It's neck is really comfortable, short, narrow, but a bit on the thicker side. It's kind of like a thick tree branch.
The electronics are nothing special, but not bad. It has the most basic P and J pickups.
Oddly enough, the pots have only two positions, on and off, so not too much choices there, but the tone rolled off gives a nice, unique, vintage boomy sound, especially with flatwounds or tapewounds.
I reccomend getting it for a starter bass, as it's a pretty versitaile little instrument with just the right amount of bells and whistles.
Easy to play in all genres and easy to set up, you can easily achieve an optimal string action on it aswell.
10/10 first bass would recommend.

Yamaha C40
This guitar is no longer manufactured. I think a Yamaha C40 might be the closest instrument as this thing is really rugged.

I bought this guitar as my first six stringer at a flea market for the equivalent of about 15$.
After a quick cleaning, a setup and some new strings it became a pretty usable instrument.
For a 50 year old instrument that was probably built from scrap wood and cardboard in a country that no longer exist, it does make some nice sounds.
If you want to learn guitar and have an almost nonexistant budget, your best bet might be a good old Czechoslovakian Cremona.
