Founded by Roland Meinl in 1951 as a one-man operation in Gutenstetten, Germany, Meinl has grown into one of the "Big Four" cymbal manufacturers alongside Zildjian, Sabian, and Paiste. The family-owned company distinguishes itself by manufacturing cymbals from six different bronze alloys — more than any other cymbal maker — enabling an exceptionally wide range of sound characteristics. Flagship cymbal lines include the Byzance series (offered in Traditional, Dark, Extra Dry, Dual, Vintage, Jazz, and Brilliant variations), the Classics Custom series, Pure Alloy, and the entry-level HCS series. Meinl also produces Generation X effect cymbals and a full range of symphonic and marching cymbals.
Beyond cymbals, Meinl operates several sub-brands under the Roland Meinl Musikinstrumente umbrella: Meinl Percussion (cajons, congas, djembes, bongos, and hand percussion), Nino Percussion (instruments designed for children and music education), Meinl Sonic Energy (singing bowls and sound therapy instruments), Meinl Stick & Brush (drumsticks and brushes), and Ortega Guitars. The percussion division manufactures an extensive catalog spanning Latin, African, and world percussion instruments.
Meinl's artist roster spans genres from jazz to metal, with endorsees including Benny Greb, Matt Garstka, Matt Halpern, Chris Coleman, Thomas Lang, Anika Nilles, Luke Holland, and Mike Johnston. The company produces cymbals at facilities in both Germany and Turkey, with additional percussion manufacturing in Thailand.
Meinl has 1138 products cataloged on Equipboard, including Crash Cymbals, Ride Cymbals, and Hi-hat Cymbals. Their gear is featured by 159 artists, with the strongest followings in Rock, Metal, and Pop. Notable users include Travis Regnier, Alex Rüdinger, and Austin Archey. Meinl's catalog spans the full price spectrum — from entry-level options to high-end flagships.
