Hello,

I've noticed content which is not related to music. For example http://equipboard.com/tom_barnzey just added all the components of his PC. I don't think that such content belongs to equipboard nor does it add value to it. He might be proud of his computer but people could start to add their screwdrivers which they use to change the battery in a pedal.... nuts.

Agree! There are certain fishermen and cooks around here who do the same.

Well I hoped for some moderation here. :)

Well I hoped for some moderation here. :)

It's a lingering condition from when the site allowed gear from any hobby and sport. Now we are more musical in nature. It has been discussed a few times before on whether we will take it down or not. For now, it is staying up. There are bigger fish to fry ;)

Fair enough. I wouldn't mind if the site is with mixed content but it should be categorized like that. On the other hand you might still get categories which are bellow a certain intelligence level.

I would say my tool box is an integral part of my sound (particularly my soldering iron).... now you are making me want to list all the special components in my homemade fuzzface!

j/k, you have a point here

Hi all, happy Memorial Day (in the US at least)!

luxiu: Let me know if you want to be a Moderator. To reiterate, there's no expected time commitment or anything like that. As michael mentioned before, it's more just added permissions we give to members that we trust with curation, and have been with the site for a while.

mineral_walter: Welcome! You've racked up an impressive amount of GearIQ in a very short period of time :) I'm enjoying reading through your gear reviews, they're very good.

I want to touch on the non-music stuff again. I don't think it has ever officially been said that non-music gear is NOT ok on Equipboard. I know it's a hotly debated topic here. The problem is, people that are interested in consuming non-music gear don't really speak up. Example: John Mayer is an avid watch enthusiast/collector. People that are into that go to John Mayer's page and enjoy browsing through it. But then those that are jarred by that info being on Equipboard come to the forum and go "what the fck is this?!" ;) So, I want to make a few points:

  1. There are some relics of the very first iteration of Equipboard where we experimented aggregating the gear of non-music pros - chefs, rock climbers, etc. We hid those folks from the site's search functionality, but they still exist on the site and we need to purge them. We just haven't gotten around to it since it's more fun and productive to work on features that you guys suggest to make the site better!

  2. Non-music gear on music artists: I am of the opinion this kind of stuff is OK to a certain extent, but there needs to be better separation for people that don't care about it. For instance, all of the non-music/lifestyle gear can be grouped in one section, and if you follow John Mayer you have a little checkbox where you can opt-out of getting any gear update emails pertaining to non-music stuff. Just an idea, definitely open to debating the best way to handle this.

  3. Marginal non-music things like PC components: I think these should be fair game. One of the more popular artists on Equipboard, deadmau5, frequently shows off what new computer components he's buying, and we've gotten feedback that people love getting those gear updates. If a music artist did a custom PC build for music and detailed it somewhere, adding those things to their Equipboard page I think is ok. We DO probably need a Computers & Peripherals category which is I think is sorely missing, and all that stuff (from MacBook Pros to video cards) should go under it.

I enjoy collecting watches myself, particularly 19th century pocket watches.... but I don't really bring that hobby over here.... I save it for the dedicated watch sites. But maybe we should fan out! Yet, where to stop? Scuba gear? My mom makes folk jewelry and quilts... wanna do that too? The server expense will go way up if you attract a following for hobbies/professions other than music.

Dear g, I'm interested about handling the gear's images replacements without bothering others –like now– by pointing issues that then I could solve by myself, of course that I could wait until this ability is open to regular users but would have no problem about being a Moderator in a shorter term for some more immediate action if everyone's fine about it. ;-)

I'm with you, Jim.

If you declare all this an official part, because Deadmau5 enjoys his computer, people will not only post their computer crap but also food and clothes and everything they buy and own until there's nothing musical left.

Hey, guys! So after four pancakes and several more hours of sleep, i'm somewhat acclimated to the island. Humidity isn't too bad, there's wind to compensate. So far, so well.

Gchiaren and the like, it seems we can make leeway for wathes, cars, etc because they do seem to have interesting backgrounds and such. Of course, there's a line to draw and most of us complain about what's past that line. Spam, Coka Cola, Ps4, etc. Utterly and completely useless.

On a side note, ehat do you guys think of that Foo Fighters throne thing?

Same as Tejava Ice Tea - exterminate. Not quite gear related. There goes the questions: are guitars or anything that artist tried considered as their gear or not? I would actually consider, artist played on that piece and should be mentioned as doing so!

Oh and question for gchlaren or michael : how big is exactly equipboard? On the scale of 1 to 72,57?

I really care about what pros used to make music in their profession.... so if a drummer tried their hand at guitar on a record or picked up a ukulele at a concert during an encore it counts

if a guy puttered around with a new instrument for a few weeks at home and posted a picture of it to his facebook I feel sketchy about it

my opinion on this is similar to my opinion on the instruments used as props in choreographed music videos... I only care about gear I am HEARING, not just seeing, because stuff that is only played at home or used as a prop wil not help people get 'that' sound they are looking for.... and that's the spirit of EB, its a get that sound kinda thing

Yeah, that's why I cringe when I see the Anderton's pages here with a billion guitars and such. Just because they held one in a 10 minute video doesn't make viable to say it's THEIR gear. #productdemo :)

The Anderton's case is picky, but I am not totally against product demo submissions as those point to specific kind of playing that some artists can develop with the spotted gear and therefore can give us a better idea of it (Mika, Abasi, Thorn).

  • Fender American Standard Telecaster
  • Vox AC30CC1 1x12 Custom Classic Combo
  • Strymon TimeLine

I still say gear demoes don't count as a gear spotting unless the artist states he has added it to his rig or makes reference to taking it to the studio for a legit session apart from the music in the demo vid

frankly, at this point in my life if I can't get an idea what something does just by looking at a picture of it and reading the product description then tis probably something I would never use, like a bit-crusher or super-crazy choir reverb... hell, a lot of times reading the product description on a pedal or amp I can guess what classic piece the circuit is ripped off from. a 1 minute demo track on the manufacturer's site will generally clue me to what component values were tweaked from a TS9 or tube sound fuzz or muff or tweed bassman or ac30 or SLO100 or.... or... or whatever!

Meh. I won't say there's NOTHING new under the sun, but for all the new stuff being cranked out by all these gear makers I am sad to report there is very little that's new... even most hardware synths are just rehashing anymore, even though they are doing it with aplomb compared to the 90s subtractive modellers

nothe important question is old stuff... should I buy a '69 Sunn? there's a guy with an EL34 equipped solarus on ebay with a fair asking price as well as a 'best offer' option and he lives in Philly right near me... do I message him and arrange to pick it up this weekend or should I admit that 5 amps is plenty?

Well, that's exactly something stating a considerable distance between Anderton's demos (usually just regular stuff) and the cases I specifically pointed (Abasi, Thorn and Mika usually get their hands over much more peculiar items… I know it's a matter of opinion but I guess that you could agree with it).
