Handao Craft Ni Gugu (憨刀工艺泥咕咕) is a traditional Chinese clay sculpture and whistle craft originating from Xun County, Henan Province. These handmade folk art pieces are shaped into animals, birds, and historical figures, then painted with vivid contrasting colors over a black base. The name “Ni Gugu” comes from the soft “gugu” sound produced when air is blown through the small whistle holes in the sculpture. Handao Craft, founded by artisan Song Kaizhan (“Handao”), modernizes this ancient intangible cultural heritage while preserving its rustic folk-art style and symbolic cultural meaning. The craft has become recognized both in China and internationally for its artistic, historical, and educational value.
