Owner Insights

We analyzed real musician discussions from forums and Reddit to find what players love, question, and tweak about Klanghelm IVGI.

Use cases and applications

  • IVGI is often used on individual channels rather than the mixbus, as users find it goes from subtle to distorted quickly on the master bus.

    Source
  • Placing IVGI post-reverb on gated reverb sends creates a pronounced 80s sound, particularly enhancing toms and snare with a big, lively character.

    Source
  • IVGI is recommended to be placed first in the insert chain, with users approaching 0 VU for optimal gain staging, utilizing the output control for desired levels.

    Source

Comparisons

  • While IVGI can provide subtle saturation, users note that Logic's Overdrive and Exciter add more noticeable harmonics, especially for higher frequencies.

    Source

Features and functionality

  • Users frequently switch between soft, hard, and clip settings on IVGI to adjust saturation aggressiveness, highlighting its versatility in sound shaping.

    Source
  • Cranking the input gain on IVGI post-reverb and gate results in an intensified effect, demonstrating the plugin's capacity for dramatic sound transformation.

    Source
  • IVGI's response knob can provide subtle EQ boosts, affecting tonal balance by enhancing low or high frequencies, depending on the setting.

    Source

Software and compatibility

  • Some users prefer other saturation options over Softube due to its iLok requirement, opting instead for free alternatives like Trash 2 from iZotope when available.

    Source
  • Some users experienced session crashes with IVGI, but others have found stability using IVGI 1 on Cubase/Windows, preferring it over IVGI 2 due to initial VST3 availability issues.

    Source

User experience

  • Despite not being linkable, proper gain staging on each channel minimizes overhead when using IVGI, according to experienced users.

Very good for tube-like saturation

I use it when I want to saturate the sound and push a little overdrive. It sounds very sweet, analog and nonlinear and I used it a lot on both synths, guitar and voice. Considering it's free, It's a must!

Good for analog flavour

Its good for console type sound, if you put it in every track. You can place right after the tape simulator and resample. Results in a very analog sound! Down the trim and raise the output, and you get a nice sweet sound.
