huh, but there are also some things that somewhat fill the gap of that. but you are right, I am young and I don't have kids.
no one without children can fathom how time consuming they are...

The thing about my submissions is that everybody looks at it as "wow there are 10 thousand submissions, that is insane, wowzers...", while many of them already have their sources down (such as Maxon's artist pages), or I added a bunch of submissions that artists used only for demonstrating purposes. This said, I made an absolute havoc on Phil X's, Andy Martin's and Rob Chapman's page.
and also you're young and don't have kids

I paid $600 I think in decent condition. Some scuffs, yellowed keys, dried goop from like patch notes taped on (goo gone, problem solved) but otherwise fully functional though its suffers from the same tired tac style buttons as my DW6000. Not a road piece. I see the Ms usually go for more, the non midis are 500-600 in fair condition all day. But the pandemic throws up deals. If you have a few dollars? why not? If you want a minty M expect $800+ these days. Its shame because its such a B list baord. Underrated and not hard to program or anything depsite the data encoder, but it shouldn't cost more than an alpha juno. Its a site chintzier in some respects. But its got a really good sound. I think it sounds better than a 106. Architecture and itnerface make it right in the jx3p amp. And if you like your 3p you will like the 61. Its the korg flavor and its really easy on the ears.
I emant to say in my original description that the poly6 has a very generic 70s mono tone but is a mediocre 1vco poly.... the poly61 is NOT generic. Stiffer, cleaner, but very much its own special tone.

the 61 is more unique sounding than the poly6. it has the dw6000/8000 filter, proprietary korg, whereas the poly6 has the juicy SSM fitler of the 70s, precursor to the Curtis filter. The 61 is thinner and squelchier but cleaner and I really like it. i sought out a 61m after falling in love with the DW sound. The 61 has a very generic 70s monosynth tone in a basic 1 vco per voice poly. Its really best for unison lines and bass. I would NEVER pay what a poly6 goes for. Its very limited and has a like it or lump it sound

I've been eyeing the S550 actually, the monitor is appealing when it has one.... I eman you can hook anthing up but you don't get the fairlight drawing tool unless you have the full roland package...

Meh... can't be arsed. I'm kind of sad it got bumped from 303 (Feist has a song, Flight #303, so I was dead chuffed on that), so I guess my next goal is 666. >:D

its about as bright as my jx8p was but the fitler sounds squelchier at high res.... it does similar things to my prophet and poly61 but in a totally different voice. Its also hella punchy. So far I've just tracked strings with it coupled with the prophet and they amde a great team in that role.... the prophet can be bright but its not squelchy, has that round moog filter vibe almost, hard to descrbe. The curtis chips are tighter but also very wet sounding? Sloshy?
the chorus on the 30 is really nice too, very lush.

Casio FZ Samplers: last of the hidden gems?
I'm sure you're right... a 16 bit sampler with an analog filter, even a digitally controlled one, is a beast.... plus you get the additive synth. I might buy an FZ1 sounds like it would be a prophet2000 killer... and then my buddy has a mirage rack, great sounding 8 bit goodness, curtis filter.... horrible to work on though. Just awful.

Casio FZ Samplers: last of the hidden gems?
I thought it was filterless for some reason. Maybe I have it mixed up with something else..... huh
Those roland machines were really similar to the prophet2000 so they're probably good. I don't know anyone who uses a vintage roland sampler though. The prophet 2000 is fantastic. Its bot sampled synth waveforms and a prophet600 filter/amp architecture. Love it, though it takes forever loading samples but they all do. Like a lot of early digital controlled synths and samplers the envelopes can be a bit sluggish and there's some stepping....

I recorded with it a few days ago and was very pelased with how it sat in the track. It has that 106 quality for sure. Need to find a rack space for it. My only gripe is that mine is a bit noisey....it probably needs service. No voices cutting out but perhaps I should look at the powersupply tantalum caps and consider dealing with the red goo of death on the oscillator chips. WHen the pandemic finally abates here I might take all of my old gear over to belltone synthworks for a solid going over.

Casio FZ Samplers: last of the hidden gems?
okay, I know a number of nonfamous people who use the FZ1 keyboard... even when new people were drawn to them by the price performance ratio. They enver sell them. For the bucks you can't get anything better. Its way easier to use than a mirage for example and has way more memory etc. It doesn't have an analog filter but it actually has a little additive synth in it. Its a giant value and rather unique. Will it replace your skronky 8, 12 or 13 bit device? not a chance, it sounds way too good. It has artifacts but the kind you get from a high end Akai. But for just samplie playback with looping and envelope gen? Perfect for that.
Roland didn't come out with a comaprable machine for years. Its a real contender. For me the lack of filter is a bummer, but I wouldn't let that stop me from buying one. Hmmm....
I would say in 80s 16 bit samplers that the prophet2000 and FZ1 are the most underrated right now and its a good time to buy at these low low prices.

Laphroaig if you want a peaty scoth. Or really anything from the Islay distilleries. Probably my favorite after Speyside distilleries. Not real big on :Lowland of all of 'em, if I'm being honest. Still, I'll take any single malt scotch over any blended, and any scotch at all over Canadian.
thanks for the analysis, I don't think I've tried Laphroaig but will have to. I seldom drink blended scotch and despise canadian whiskey. That's prohibition era garbage. I do, however, like a good bourbon.
All that said, I take mine neat.
as do I
Jameson (Irish whiskey) is for whiskey sours, one of only a handful of mixed drings I bother with (the other few being Stiners, Brandy Alexanders, Vespers, G&T, and of course, a proper dry martini, made to Trapper John's exact specifications, a 5 to 1 ratio--you'll note with the exception of the Vesper, they're all duos, and no "trendy shooters," as a former bartender, I like simple, clean, and get you blasted quick).
the only irish whiskey worth a damn is tullamore dew... if I'm at a show chugging down PBR like a college student and someone buys me a shot of jameson I'll drink it, but I never pay for itmyself.
Then there's wine and beer. That's a subject unto itself, and as someone who took the tour of the Pilsner Brewry in Czech Republic, as well as the Biltmore House Winery, I'm afraid I'm rather spoiled on that topic--answer, Malbec, the leggier, the better. As to beer? Stout or porter, dark and delicious, served at the proper temp. This American notion that a beer has to be ice cold to drink just ruins the flavor, you can't taste tne nuance of the grains used to make it!
dude I am a boreaux man, any style, coates du bordeaux, grand crux, medoc.... you name it. At elast for wine that I drink WITHOUT food. Table wine I like a lot of riojas, sangioveses, coates du rhone. Occassionally I deign to drink a californian blend if I'm desperate. Now my favorite style for special occassions is chateaunuf du pape. But even a mediocre one is like 40 bucks so its a once in a while thing.
Beer. Never met a beer I didn't like besides american big brewery garbage and even thats okay when you're at a punk show. In fact, there's nothing more philadelphian than going to a punk show and drinking PBR or Yuengling lager (just known as 'a lager' here) while smoking parliaments (known as p-funks here).... its a grand philly tradition! Disgusting on every front. I won't speak to beer temperature as I'm all voer the map depending on the style or country of origin. I will say I like to buy pilsner cold and let it warm up to slightly below room temp for an ideal lagery goodness....
MARTINIS. I'm retty passionate about my whisper vermouth martini. More of a 6 to 1 the way I make it in MY glasses. In vodka ones I've recently gone from belvedere to the kettle one side because the bite of the k1 has a bit of that gin quality while delivering the smoother buzz of vodka.... in gin? Tangueray is usually good enough although blue saphire is best.... although philly has some wonderful distilleries now, small batch and Art in the Age for example makes a fantastic gin and vodka for martinis. A martini should never be dirty. Yuck, though an extra large olive, no pimento, is a must. I mean a HUGE spanish olive. Without this the drink will fail. 2 smaller ones will not do. It needs to be a cavern for storing the last sip. The martini is my favorite cocktail of all time. I'm well known for drinking 2 any time I'm out at a bar of quality and can swing an uber home. Its also the only item I will send back if its not right. Ive never sent food back to a kitchen that I can recall and any other drink I will soldier through, but a martini. It need to be right. Certain bartenders know how I like it and just ask me if I want the usual.

like a classic 80s analog poly? If you don't need knobs the roland alpha junos, JX series and certain mks series racks are still a great value though not as cheap as they should be. I had a JX8p I didn't care for the sound of. I've had an mks50 for YEARS, alpha juno in a rack. I recently got an MKS30 and pg200 controller which is a jx3p in a rack and I gotta say the 3p sounds better than the 8p, I have no idea why because I'm pretty sure they use the same oscillator and filter chips. But for your issue the problem is probably price. The synths I mentioned are about the 500 USD mark on average, soemtimes lower.
If you want knobs and VCOs I feel like for somewhere between 800 and 2000 USD the Sequential Circuits Prophet 600 is a fantastic value. You want a gligli modded one. You will probably have to have the plastic pots replaced eventually when your kid breaks a knob off (yes, I may be in this situation, ahem) and you can also get a stereo voice spread add on if you're good with drilling a second output jack into it... but the basic voice of the synth is fantstic. Pure amaerican curtis filter goodness. Drifty, lush VCOs and a softness even at snappy, harsh settings. I would not hesitate to buy one, in fact I didn't. I snapped mine up for $1000 and would do it again.
The korg Logues sound very vintage. TOwards the 'neutral' side of the equation but still vintage sound and vintage routing. If you can live with 4 voices and no Multi Engine (a very unvintage digital oscillator) the Minilogue can be had used for peanuts and is VERY VERY good. Another option in 4 oscillator world is the DSI mopho X4. Love mine. Has a late 80s 'synth on a chip' sound. DCOs, very unch and agressive. Huge routing options. Costs about 700 USD used. Minilogue is cheaper but less capable and far less agressive.

I like glenfiddich a lot too. I used to swear by the glenlivet 12 year but kinda got burned out on its heady ethanol punch and live the peatier flavor of the 'fiddich now tha I don't drink whiskey as much as I used to.

I love it when people use hardware instruments. You have an excellent point, I (hopefully) plan on getting some hardware synths in the future, I'm mostly an edm guy who works with midi, and the hardware synths I can afford at the moment would'nt do me much good in the genres I prefer.
used prices are way down in the pandemic.... now is the time! I honestly like to sleep with my favorite synths. Okay, its more accidentally falling asleep with them, but the arp odyssey just wants to hug you.

Aye, I drink scotch anyway. Hard to get blooterd, less chance I'll act a maggot. :D The older the better, scotch. I've a few Aussie mates myself, hate I didn't take 'em up on the offer to move to Alice Springs when I had the chance some 15 years back, .
ever had Mortlach, a faily friend smuggled me an 18 year bottle from the UK and it was hands down my favorite single malt which is saying alot.

I think most of us use paid plugins, I relate to that. I prefer Native Instruments stuff and Serum etc.. But I definitely do love Helm. I used it before I had Serum and It was a great alternative.
I gotta tell ya, for what a lot of paid instruments that are distinctly superior to freeware instruments cost I would rather buy a physical instrument. Its a bit more coin but worth having soemthing you can play and take to gigs... etc etc. And in analog style it takes a processor hungry Uhe engine to compete with a VCO and legit VCF. Just saying. I think hardware for mixing is a matter of taste at this point and if you're not obsessed with vintage hardware's weird artifacts then kontakt etc is just great, hell digital recording IS sampling. But nothing from the boxbeats a vox ac30 or a prophet... helle ven hybrids, I'll take peak/summit over serum any old day for wavetables and subtractive. I see no reason to pay for a synth plugin when you can save your beans up for a solid physical instrument.
exceptions are things like razor which takes additive way beyond even the K5000 or like ummm, I can't think of another one right now. I mainly have a muse receptor to host razor live. OH! absynth! stillgreat, nothing like it in hardware.

I just asked because i wanted advice on the cut off/ fade back. It was an obscure fault that i had not encountered in 35+ years of playing.
thinking about its a PSU issue and if not it may actually be a bad buffered bypass... your powersupply is the most likely culrit. Bite the bullet and buy a good PSU. Voodoo Lab obviously is the msot venerable option. I gotta be honest, my pedals are run off dedicated wall warts into the isolated outs of a good furman. I enver have issues with all my pwoer conditioners, but it nescessitates racks. Of course I also have the ehad switcher, the lexicons and other stuff so I need the racks anyway. And as a synthesist and engineer I already am quite rackmount-centric. YMMV on power conditioning, ut its incredibly reliable, seldom spoken about. Not just any furman will do though, you need the right one for wall wart spacing and a it needs to be well isolated outputs so tis the upper echelon of furmans. I forget which model I use now, its banked up with some lesser ones, PL8s I think. I'm more stationary for live performance, you tube shit. So I have a furman in the synth/processor rack and then a smaller rack hiding out with just 4 furmans in it.

god damn I thought I missed my poly-800 until I got my poly61... Although being paraphonic the 800 really delivered some great mono lines with the oscillators stacked through th sole fitler. Still its the ugly stepchild. Wonder why they siexed on that reviled little prosumer synth to emulate? I thought I was the only person who liked it.

My unsolicited 2 cents: If you're going to give into temptation, do it for a very clean example that would be easier to flip for crazy money in a few years...
what do you thin of this one, Pkenneth?
she's tempting.... very mint. Seems like it needs a good cleaning and maybe power supply recapping to be safe, but so clean otherwise.

do I have to say it? You know me, Terry. If your pedalboard is intermittent and its daunting to track the problem down perhaps your board is too elaborate.
Seriously though, you also have some older buffered bypass pedals, are the jacks well tensioned and clean, one bad pedal in or out and the whole thing is down. And you went solderless cables and said they didn't work and went back to your old cheapies. Maybe solerless was fine but you have loose jacks with dirt or rust on them?

That said, a Roland Jazz Chorus with no effects loop... Must be an older amp, like, waaaaaaaaay older, because almost all the JC models I've ever used have had an effects loop. /shrug
the mono one didn't have an effects loop and if I'm not mistaken the earliest 120s didn't either but this was soon added

cable testers aren't 100%. an itnermittent problem could be temperature related. As a bad bit of copper wire retracts or expands the conenction goes wonky or a bad soldering joint is only cold in certain weather. I haven't used a cable tester in years. Tooo many false reads of itnermittent cables as good
