COVID-19 - How's everyone doing? Anyone playing more music?

KK, just make sure you respect the rules, stay in unless you need groceries... and given your forced evacuation from Slovenia maybe take your temperature a couple times a day for the next 14 days, which is what I'm doing after having so much patient contact at work

and most of the administrative staff was officially laid off yesterday (including me), if this persists for too long we'll all be out of jobs permanently as our company is a non-prof and may not survive... fortunately they're covering my health insurance until june, it'd be a bitch if I got this virus at work and then they took my health insurance, wouldn't it?

COVID-19 - How's everyone doing? Anyone playing more music?

my studio is no longer in my home and I'm really regretting moving most of my gear out. I just have a few a guitars and a few amps here and a digital piano :-(

there was just no space at my house for my collection of gear and I moved into my best friend's studio. We're now closed up, His wife's an ER doctor.

I guess I could just do some ITB productions in FL, but I miss my monster synth collection. I've only got a moog, ARP and an mks50 left here and my SSL interface didn't come yet.

working in healthcare myself I was potentially exposed myself for a few days this week before I threw in the towell so I'm taking my temperature a few times a day for the next 14 days. No symptoms yet but I'm pretty much self-isolated with my family. If I don't need to go get groceries I might not come out for the next week or so, maybe longer.

Everyone be safe. If you believe in anything then go ahead and pray.

the bulk of us on EB are relatively young and healthy and so should not be at risk in the long run, but be cautious having contact with your older loved ones....

Boss DD-whatever vs. MXR Carbon Copy - ease of use?

for improved digital delay with good modulation consider the more affordable classics (like a PCM41 over the better known 42 :-). I like the following (only one's a pedal because it was reissued for guitarists and its great):

https://equipboard.com/items/korg-sdd-3000-programmable-digital-delay-pedal

https://equipboard.com/items/lexicon-pcm-41

https://equipboard.com/items/yamaha-spx90-digital-multi-effects-processor

and this guy, which is my secret weapon: https://equipboard.com/items/toa-310d-multi-output-digital-delay

but don't tell anyone about it...

Roland also made some delays that were directly comparable to the Korg and had SOME of the features of the Toa, but the Korg soudns more musical as a delay whereas the roland's a bit thin and tinny and the korg instrument preamp is better. That's the mid-period U2 sound.

Its just impossible to make anything but a bare-bones digital delay in a stomp without resorting to USB connectivity. The toneprint phone app somewhat bypasses this if you don't want to edit patches yourself, but in digital delay-land I just feel 19" rack is king and worth exploring. Either that or get something with a bigger pedalboard footprint in the now ubiquitous Line 6 format.

Delete this post once you read it, I don't want Toa's to become expensive because I would really have a whole rack of them.

Boss DD-whatever vs. MXR Carbon Copy - ease of use?

I think its 500 or 600, which is why its so dark, the longer the delay time the more BBD chips needed, so the higher the degradation and the more companding required to reduce noise on each repeat. Most 80s delays of this type did 300 which is plenty for most guitar purposes savethe most hair metally, power ballady solo sounds. You won't be able to use it for super long ping ponging delays but its not really for that. If you want the analog flavor available (in addition to everything else under the sun) and want to be able to make it stereo and hella long then look at a used TC flashback x4. The strymon sounds a bit more accurate for tape echo to me, but used x4s sound great, have vst-like patch creation software AND go for about $120 on the used market. I own one. It never leaves my studio. Wired permanently to my DSI now doing a fake tape delay that kills it in the mix... and my rig has lexicon units in it allover my sends and returns for live, but for tempo syncable analog echo sounds live? I love the flashback. I also think its funny that I have a mopho X4 feeding a flashback X4. X4 fest! The flashback seems complicated, but its all 'up front' stuff. Once you have a few tone prints on tap you're done other than selecting a delay sound for each of the 3 stomps and tapping tempo when the drummer clicks in if needed. Its also a secret flange/chorus that can sound pretty good. I've used it over classic modulations when recording before and you know I own some really nice stuff. It has a personality.

but also consider the DOD rubberneck... its superb. all analog BBD based, tap tempo, relatively long delay time and it has EQ for the repeats to make them sit in the pocket. It might even be stereo. I haven't tried one in a while. I actually asked DOD to send me a demo unit to review for the site but they declined. Its too bad, I woulda praised the hell out of it because its like a more affordable, more feature-laden memory lane for half the price.

EDIT: If you're set on 3 knob simplicity and can deal with modest delay time make sure you try the waza dm2 versus the mxr. They both have their own personality. The waza sounds just like my old one but its a little less hissy ore like the dm3 I had (the dm3 actually sounds better and cleaner for modest delays, but it can't self oscillate). I think the waza has the original 300ms mode and a new 600ms mode on a switch but no modulation. Very different but also great. The mxr is definitely meant to be in the memory-man camp. It was designed by George Tripps and we all know way huge is a major EHX fanboy brand. Might as well try a memory boy too... just hit a good store and audition them.

Boss DD-whatever vs. MXR Carbon Copy - ease of use?

not remotely comparable... othe than the fact that they echo they have nothing else in common... buy a carbon copy and keep the DD6 too... they do the same job in such different ways that it ceases to be the same job. If you go carbon copy say goodbye to long delay times and pristine repeats. Homey don't play that. That said, the carbon copy is a great modern take on a classic 80s BBD delay sound. Really hella nice at being what it is. Only modern BBD echo I liked better was the now discontinued malekko 300 (or something like that, the one with Gort on it that came in 2 max delay times as well as bright and dark flavors). I've owned some classic delays like the DM2 and AD9 and I still have a carbon copy around, what's that say for it?

oh, you will of course be losing the hold and reverse modes too.... analog echo is just an echo. No tap tempo either... mono only. Ummmm….

bass pedals and effects

keep in mind a recorded bass tone these days will be a mixture of a miked amplifier and a DI sound most of the time, even live sound is usually handled that way. There will also be post effects shaping the sound, both compression and EQ, so what Nikki ehars coming from his amp and what you're hearing in a finished mix are 2 different things.

I'm looking to buy a Juno 6, not 60, 6.... USA 110-120v wall voltage

been there, its been slow going but there's a couple for a somewhat fair price this week, contacted sellers about some particulars and posted here while waiting... you neer know when a forum rat might go "I have a juno my dad gave me! it sucks, it doesn't do supersaw"

ironically I just got a msg on reverb from a Japanese dealer (ugh) and that one's a no-go

if I score a juno6 my collection of instruments feels very thorough after decades of building it up and the final frontier is either more modular or unobtainium synths like the jupiter8, PPG wave, expander etc....

I'm really going to give this juno a good home. I'll service it and love it nd it 'll get to be with tis bretheren from other countries

6yover 6 years ago

I'm looking to buy a Juno 6, not 60, 6.... USA 110-120v wall voltage

straight up, man... been looking for since maybe last spring? there's always a catch when you fnd one and its not price, its something else... bad keys, broken slider, wrog voltage, hacked mods that need repair

I'll get one eventually, I'm persistent.... you don't score a '62 vox ac30 in the USA by being a dangus

6yover 6 years ago

I'm looking to buy a Juno 6, not 60, 6.... USA 110-120v wall voltage

I've BEEN trying LOL.... that's why I'm psoting ehre.... finding someone parting with one that's stock USA voltage is IMPOSSIBLE anymore

I have money to burn, I just can't find a working example that's stock USA voltage

6yover 6 years ago

I'm looking to buy a Juno 6, not 60, 6.... USA 110-120v wall voltage

I'm on a quest for a juno 6, the original with no patch storage, not the 60.... if anyone has one that takes US 110v and might be willing to sell it to me, let me know. I'll pay fairly. Unserviced 6es seem to go for a good 1200+ USD in well worn but functional condition when you can find one and I would pay a solid 1500 US for a guaranteed working example with rough cosmetics/ road wear and I would consider a really pristine one if the asking price were under 2000 USD... again, not a 60, I don't need aptch memory, I just want the 6

it kills me to do this because its a such a basic synth, but its just special... every time I see on its in japan and even setting aside shipping its hard to communicate with the seller and there's a fear that it will be Japanese voltage. I don't wanna run it on a variac over 20 volts, that's just asking for ground hum

I saw that in january, something feels wrong about it.... but I have no doubt korg will make SOMEthing 2600ish and budget friendly.... but I doubt it'll be cheaper than the behringer new.

oh man, I just bought another odyssey from a dude who was hard up. Full size keyboard with sequencer (because who has enough SQ1s?), hard case, mk2 cosmetics... I'm so stoked. I didn't like the slim key odyssey so i traded for module and an SQ1 years ago, but this one? I'm a play the hell outts this board.

How to edit the contents of a section ??

I also wish it was possible to split vst synths from vst effects

I agree, we'll see what we can do about that.... we're cosntantly refining. I'll mention it to Giullio and Mike

I'll straighten the vitalizer out for you when I have a sec this weekend... unless you can resize your pic, its not complicated... a simple google search will walk you through it with whatever apps you already have for image files.

I see you fixed the K2 yourself by adding the appropriate category to your page, good work My Dude

those are user error... they're categorized right but you didn't put a 'synthesizer' category in your gear list for the k2 so it went in 'other gear'... resort

the vtalizer? you picked a ahrdware version.... if we don't have the plugin in our database you, the user, can add it from the 'submit' drop down on the menu bar between 'esplore' and 'gear guides'

have at it

searching for a good metal guitar

floyds are a real hassle.... if you really want that functionality a babicz strat bridge and locking tuners will get you there without all the fiddly parts of a floyd.... the floyd was a great, innovative design in the 80s but we've come a long way, baby

by the way, I forgot to comment on the schecter C-1, its a great guitar. Or it was. Not sure about now, but the older ones that were made in korea were winners. They are very much in the Jackson soloist/performer mould...

searching for a good metal guitar

Oh dear, not a lot of help about today? Sorry, can't offer any useful advice myself but hey...
next to a National, this is the most metal guitar I've seen! https://youtu.be/2eEB-vJic_o

ahahaha

umm, I love jacksons (as much as I can love any slender necked pointy guitar), but if its not a USA made one then don't bother...

I mean, Tony Iommi says that nothing is more metal than an SG! for shredding a good charvel san dimas will usually do the trick...

dean and EVH guitars are all decent instruments with the heavy, shreddy playerin mind but again, the really good oens are the high end ones. how much do you wanna spend? For budget metal guitars I feel like there are better makes. And what style do you want? super strat? set neck? I dunno… then there's the whole floyd upgrades game, the stock Floyd can be a bass sucker tonally, you'll want a new bridge block etc etc.... man, don't get me started, pointy poodle metal guitars are a rabbit hole of checks and balances just like high gain amps... it'll drive you to drink

6yover 6 years ago

There's a message floatin' in the air...

oh man, this thread is so brilliant

the video is blurry but I think they're some sort of pencil condenser from the era, possibly even the coveted akg c451, a fine small diaphragm mic for any recording application although not a big winner on stage due to feedback issues

What was your first instrument purchase?

My first Harmonica was a Marine Band in E, chosen because someone told me that most blues is played in E... Only problem being it was was of course E in the diatonic major, not blues minor. I just kept buying harmonicas in random keys until I learned that it's the A harp that plays in E minor; in the 'cross harp' position. The E harmonica's still pretty much mint in a drawer somewhere - No one I know plays blues in B!

I love that story

tb-303 clones, why I stopped grumbling and bought Uli's TD3 even though I don't need it

it chaps my ass to compliment a behringer product (again, the neutron is so kick ass).... but the td3 is a 303. I think the square sounds more right than the bass bot and the sequencer slide and accent are spot on. Got it today and enjoyed it after I put my kid to sleep. Didn't put it up against the bassot and x0x yet. But it just soudns great, no effects added. Its a little lighter than the bassbot or a real 303... also the pots feel rgeat. Not as loose as an old one but not as tight as the bassbot was when new, very easy to sweep around. Squelchy, shrieking goodness for the price of dinner and a movie for 2.

I just noticed my bassbot had cv/gate outs all along that I never used.... no clock input, although the Behringer's is finnicky being a clone and wants 24 ppq like an old roland device versus korg's 2ppq for the volca's. It'll apparently do 2ppq, but Uli doesn't recommend it. Haven't tried it yet. I'll have to test the midi clock sync first, get that sorted and the start/stop from a DAW, then think about live performance. 303 clones are such a crap shoot. none of them have all the features one would want.

2600s!

Oh it's ok, I haven't been sat here sulking iike a moody teenager (the girlfriend came to visit, which is why I've been quiet, as she takes over my entire life when she's here!). . It's like they've got a blind spot when it comes to anything that doesn't fall into their little hermetic world.

I come from a family of classical/jazz musicians, the most educated one is pretty open-minded, but ym dad, for isntance, who shared a small manhattan apartment with a bunch of juliard students, absorbed a lot fo snobbery from those undergrad music majors and often bandies about the term 'real music'. Don't get me started. There's even a world within a world where the 20th century harmony/12 tone types look down their noses at the minimalist movement. That would be my dad. Someone like Cage is not 'real music' whereas the right jazz? That is, but only if the composer went to school like Miles. I feel like some unreal music could have similar content and that these types refuse to hear because the composer is not from their hermetically sealed world.

6yover 6 years ago

tb-303 clones, why I stopped grumbling and bought Uli's TD3 even though I don't need it

you make really good points, though a new TD3 is still solidly 2/3rd the cost of a used TB3 (maybe even half the cost, wait'll they hit the second hand market)... but no doubt you get a lot from roland for the extra money! However, look at my gear list. I don't need extra features, I don't even need another 303 clone. I have a synth for every job. I really just want a tb303 sequencer with clock and cv/gate in addition to midi. For someone else the TB3 is a major contender. For oldheads with piles of synthesizers not so much. Now its not an analog purist thing. I'm thinking of buying a roland System 1M to interact with my other modula gear and add some dgital weirdness. Its just that I don't like paying for bells and whistles I won't use....

I realy have an absurd amount of gear, and I've been selling stuff I'm not using as I buy different stuff, but the synth to human ratio in my studio is way out of whack.... and that's not including the many instruments owned by my bandmates.

6yover 6 years ago

tb-303 clones, why I stopped grumbling and bought Uli's TD3 even though I don't need it

so for $150 you cna get the Behringer 303 clone.... one of their many firect rip-offs of old synthesizers (some long discontinued, others already reissued by Korg/ARP). Ignoring the ethics of Uli's business I decided to bite even though I have a x0x and a bassbot. Here's why:

CONNECTIVITY

Both the bassbot and x0x have midi capabilities, with the bassbot its midi and tis pretty basic... the x0x has similar midi functionality in addition to the proprietary roland pre-mid dinsync from the original line of drum machines and synths... I have modular gear in the eurorack format as well loads of korg gear that sues the volka style Korg analog clock on a minijack not to mention a novation sequencer/synth that generates korg clock from midi clock. At half the price of a x0x or bassbot the td3 is a no-brainer because of the additional clock input, allowinf me to use a mono TS minijack in palce of a pricier midi cable (and saving a channel of output from my midi patchbay wasted on just clock for the sequencer). On top of that the thing has its DS1 circuit already built into it saving another bt of hassle unless I want to go distortion+ or Rat. But lastly the thing has CV/gate out for the sequencer allowing me to send TB303 sequences to my modular synths if I want. I get that the x0x is the original 303 clone with the classic sequencer and predates the eurorack boom, but when I got my bassbot mk1 the thing was priced at a solid $500 if I recall and I feel like cv/gate was a glaring omission given that eurorack was going strong. The frickin' bass station rack from the 90s has cv/gate i/o as well as an internal mid to cv converter! Though cheaper, the mk2 has the same omission and I wonder how cyclone hopes to compete with Uli when their connectivity is so inferior.

Unless the behringer soudns markedly inferior to my odler 303 units then they are going out the door. For what I'll make on them I can buy a fleet of behringers.

My TD3 arrives some time this week, I have every itnention of making a quick demo of tis basic, standalone 303 functions that I'll post. If Ic an find time I will try to set the sequencers and sound engines the same on all 3 of my clones and do side by side comparison although I've already found this to be a crap shoot with the bassbot and x0x as the controls and sequencers just respond a little different. The whole process is a rabbit hole. The only reward is that both sound good and rolandy. Anyway, I ould lvoe to ehar other people's thoughts on this.

very accurate musicology! yeah, even our contry music comes from scots traditional folk music infused with our race music.... and your celtic music adopted african isntruments like the banjo eventually too! you don't get our finest show tunes from folks like Cole Porter without the merging of gilbert and sullivan operata with jazz. Imagine how much poorer music would be if paiament had given us a few MPs in the late 1700s!

so what do you think of the op1? our own Xaqary swears by his. I kinda look at teenage engineering soemtimes and then chicken out. Theinterfaces are just so sleek and modern. I feel more confortable with giant stuff with full size knobs, tons of connectors and lots of 'em both. There's such a wealth of gear now its really overwhelming. And its ahrd not to bankrupt myself buying gear I might not use much. I've been trying to selll stuff off lately that hasn't been used in a while.

Hiya Jim, No, neither do I! Mind you, a) I'm still not sure how the Odyssey 'really' works (as in, I'm sure there's tonalities I've yet to discover, so maybe I should work all those out first before declaring that it's redundant) and b) Korg have made a point of calling this the 'full-sized' 2600, so maybe they're planning a smaller or a desktop version of it for the future? Sort of like what they did with the MS20, but the other way around?

I feel like I've mined the Odyssey out. Its not even in my live rig anymore. I love it, instant John Foxx. But I really wanted a 2600 anyway. I've been lusting after one for decades.

good point on the full size versus pint size.... there are some supposedly leaked photos on the web of a less historically accurate korg reissue, but who knows? It could still be massively xpensive. I expect behringer's rack unit will clock in at a grand or less. Its Uli after all.
