Equipboard Improvement and Idea Thread - August 2025 Edition
Would it be possible to make it so we can list more specific genres on individual artist pages? On user profiles and band pages, we can add very niche subgenres, but all individual artists get are the very topmost categories. It's probably difficult to work out how specific the subgenres should be (especially with stuff like extreme metal) but I think the selection available on user pages and stuff is quite solid already. At the very least, please separate Folk, World, and Country!
I likey! Don't forget kenzo-disco.

I miss being able to respond to community gear photos and reviews.
We brought back replies to gear reviews and rig photos! Let us know what you think.
I didn't notice comments were disabled. How long was I oblivious, Michael?

New to Equipboard? Dazed? Confused? Start here. 😎
Hello, everyone. Haven't viewed this website for several years. Did things change?
Yes
For example, there was a lot of gear in Solar Fields' page that was there before that isn't there now. I added a couple, but can't be sure of the rest.
Not sure about specific artists but there's been general changes galore that may be driving artist specific changes.

right so this is a serious code issue, what browser are you using?
non sequitur: so your user name is "the pedal architect," right? do you design and build your own stuff?

Equipboard Improvement and Idea Thread - August 2025 Edition
On the google AI tip, it definitely prefers scientific/technical questions when there are multiple or conflicting answers, perhaps our problem is that the LLM is still underdeveloped in some areas
The limited oopsie window is something many new contributors grind against. It's a high-friction design feature with seemingly low upside in 2025.
I think this is the priority right now. The oopsie window(as you charmingly dubbed it) generates a lot of needless work for mods and admins and probably turns off a lot of new users. If someone knows they 'pulled a Homer' they should be able to fix it at any time, but only their own submissions. That will knock out the typos and completely erroneous items serving to clean up the database which should improve sitewide accuracy.
@hashimoto the 24ao isn't inputs, it's 24 channels DA sabre converters plus 24 adat in and out. I run mine as a satellite over a cat6 cable to feed my console. My main interface is the 828es with a couple adat units slaved up to provide 26 ins and outs that are mostly hardware inserts for pro tools right now. I've got like 22 compressors and other toys hooked up so I can compress or run wacky fx pre-automation with 2 sets of monitors and 4 free inputs for the odd overdub. Its mutated a lit based on the projects that I have somce I first upgraded my computer and converters 4 or 5 years ago. The motu stuff with ess 32bit converters is the best bang for buck if your goal is fidelity. My other converters are just adequate by comparison

Thanks for asking, @michael. :)
1) I want Equipboard to be THE authoritative source LLMs reference to answer user questions about gear.
Agree! Why does Google AI hate us? Is it pay to play? I mean AI is robbery but if everyone is being robbed why not us too?
2) I want to be able to interact with the user community here beyond forum chatter.
I miss being able to respond to community gear photos and reviews.
I'd love to be able to search for other community members that have the same obscure gear I do, or find someone that owns something I'm thinking of buying, so I can ask them questions about it, pre-purchase.
I know DM systems are a pain to integrate, but if this site had one, I'd visit a lot more often than I currently do.
Yeah :(

Personally I'd like these forums to be busier. A place to get fairly speedy responses on questions about specific gear.
How you get to that point I don't know!
Used to be like that when I joined, now not so much. Dunno.

B. Item Description
Then we might standardize the Item Description text a bit. It's a bit wild at the moment, and I'm not very good at it either. For example, how to list specs or features... it looks best I think when the text is highlighted in background color and not connected. I don't know how to do that or how to code it in the right text format. Here's an example under Product Specs: https://equipboard.com/items/motu-24ao-usb-avb-ethernet-audio-interface
I have one of those feeding the first 24 inputs of my console.

I just happened to duck in for the 1st time in awhile and I get to post first!
DM system PLEASE, provide a longer time period to delete your own erroneous entries (maybe forever?), implementation of google translate (I just saw an entry where the documentation was in Asian pacific characters of some sort, I've seen Cyrillic and another one I saw this year had Arabic [I think, maybe farsi?] so auto-translate would be so cool to overcome my Western ignorance of non-latin writing systems, though it may not be possible), I've said before and I'm saying it again for emphasis - I want to become an immortal robot who can transform into a fighter plane (or a robot dinosaur, that's even better), some kind of facility to establish zoom meetups to share information in real time? That sounds goofy but it would be cool if the site could have some real time functions as I addressed with the DMs... better screening of self-artist ads, we should all refrain from adding ourselves because people with a handful of fans should be able to rely on their fans to add them because equipboard is about giving credit where its due,but not to yourself! If the site could achieve world peace, I would be grateful, but its huge ask.
I would also like to see more articles about making do with what you've got, and I am NOT the right guy to write those, but in these tough times people need to maximize even a 20 dollar investment's creative potential.

One thing I remember reading when the album came out was that he used 2 amps layered up, 1 tube and 1 solid state. That was at a time when solid state was really uncool.

What does everyone think of the new SSL Oracle analog mixer?
https://youtu.be/dpVT4p_JEcU?si=0cn-_2hp6hMx06_m
I started to get a little hot and bothered when he got to the stereo busses and explained the width control and that the inserts couldbe put in mid/side
12m12 months ago
but you're clear that I said no to you, and I mean it, right?
I don't want to deal with this, once the OP made me feel uncomfortable, I really regretted even mentioning I have a collection of picks from famous artists of the 90s and earlier (and as the thread shows, when he was bugging me regularly to search for the pick collection, I really lost my temper with him, but I should have said they weren't for sale when I couldn't locate them easily). Mentioning my keepsakes was just a colorful aside on another thread many years ago. I was just making chitchat with acquaintances. Was I tempted to find them and sell some when the OP started this thread? For a hot minute, it was rough financial patch, but the level of obsession was WAY too high. I've decided to retain all of my keepsakes and allow my son to dispose of them when I'm gone. Sorry to disappoint. Since this incident my policy is that my possessions are not for sale on equipboard unless I create a sale thread with a link to reverb or ebay... which happens from time to time. Thank you.

I'll get around to this shortly. I have to do it from my laptop, 'submit duplicate' doesn't show up on the mobile layout anymore.
12m12 months ago
I did find them along with other artist's picks some time ago, but when I did I thought better of getting rid of them... I just don't want to deal with the logistics of selling these tiny little keepsakes via the internet or the personalitiesinvolved. I don't know what they're worth anyway. Whatever it is it's not enough to cancel out the hassle.

What does everyone think of the new SSL Oracle analog mixer?
Anything not in bold is rambling. Not for the ungeeky.
I would say the bus compressor might be THE most defining part of the SSL sound (the eq us not THAT colorful, the E being more vibey than the G and the boards are pretty neutral unless pushed hard) and Oracle comes with a bus+ compressor on the outputs and E/G eq on every channel so the 2 most popular SSL features are there. What they omitted was channel dynamics; the gate and compressor on every channel. Origin omitted the dynamics too but its relatively cheap. Oracle is essentially an origin, same exact feature set, the $100k cost difference is all the remote control, automation and recall.
A lot of people, myself included, really liked having a vca compressor and gate on every channel. You didn't have to go to the patchbay unless you wanted something special. I guess it would hy ave made the base model $200k+ but with something like this I say "in for a penny, in for a pound." The recall would be such a game changer until I needed to compress an individual track. Then I would have to do a recall sheet. The trade off is that the control surface is about the size of my budget 32 channel console, so as long as you have a closet for the 2 to 3 racks you could put Oracle in a spare bedroom. Adding dynamics would make the form factor a bit larger and the racks would be taller I guess.
I can't help thinking they're testing the waters and next year they might release an "Oracle Plus" thats a remote controlled Duality (which us the only current SSL with channel dynamics) leaving early Oracle adopters in the wilderness. SSL never used to do business like that, up until the 9000j all the E and G/G+ components were fully interchangeable and they stood behind those desks for decades. I think the J and K channels can work in either 9000 series frame too, just not the center section. I don't know how you would upgrade it modify an Oracle like people used to load E parts into Gs or G+ computers into an E since the control surface only has knobs for what's in the rack. Even if the cards are interchangeable the surface won't reflect a change in channel card.
If I hit the jackpot I would be hesitant to buy this thing even though it hits so many points. I would be waiting for the other shoe to drop on a more comprehensive model. For my personal use case I could lose the mic preamps and trade them for compressor/gates. Or just compressors, I can live with ITB gating, its finicky but it opens instantly and then there's Silencer, total game changer for live drums if you have patience with it. I rarely use my hardware gates and de-esser anymore, usually for gimmicks like keying guitars from drum machines and retro vocals.
To be fair, 200k for the 48 channel Oracle is cheaper than a new 4048g+ in the 90s without adjusting for inflation (the web says 250k in 1995 is equivalent to about 525k today making the Oracle about 38% the cost of the flagship SSL of the 90s)... the Oracle has 2 extra stereo groups like a 9000 but a G+ has those channel gates and comps. Although Google ai seems to think a 48 channel J or K would gave been about 200k new but I've never seen one that small and I remember them costing studios half a million to a million bucks for the high channel counts. In modern dollars 150-200k may not be all that much to a successful studio or pop producer. There are facilities and freelancersthat still turn a tidy profit... I don'tknowhow, but they do, even without physical record sales. Maybe it's a shell game. I suspect a lot of independent pop and hiphop producers with some hits under their belt will install Oracles in their homes and turn 2 closets into the machine room and vocal booth, but I don'tknow how many people fit that description.
The lack of response to this thread shows how limited the market is for Oracle and I can't imagine SSL doesn't know that, but it does seem weird that it's an almost complete analog system with all the convenience of a daw that can fit in the rec room at a price that's a down payment on a mansion or commercial property. It doesn't seem aimed at big facilities that do the big legacy rock and country artists. Even 48 channels is too small. After some thought about Oracle, I'm kinda glad they developed this thing because fir me analog us not dead but ur needs to evolve to meet the moment.

Just checking, I guess the non-bigsby does have a different model number. By the way I used to own a professional series Cadillac green duo jet w/bigsby. I don't think mine had the arm pad so maybe it was a different model.
I'll put the merge in if you can't. Let me know.
12m12 months ago
Yes. There's a non-bigsby model, of course, but it's the bigsby version pictured in both... I wonder if one is meant to be the non-bigsby Cadillac green duo jet and it's just the wrong photo?

What does everyone think of the new SSL Oracle analog mixer?
https://solidstatelogic.com/media/solid-state-logic-launch-oracle-a-future-analogue-console
I wish they had included the G channel dynamics and they omitted a separate short fader (though I assume the 100mm faders do double duty and can be switched to the monitor path), but it's pretty cool... like a euphonix c series or the Harrison series 10 and 12 where the analog mixer is in a rack and the console is a control surface. I'm assuming the software running it is far more advanced and that the PSU is a lot more efficient than the 80s and 90s attempts at a system like this. It would be cool if they would post a manual. The specs bullet list is pretty vague, nothing about routing :(
https://solidstatelogic.com/products/oracle
I'm assuming it'll be 100k for a base 16 channel model so it's out of my price range, but I think I want one anyway. Maybe I'll get lucky and find a bag of money on the subway or something. This is the first SSL I've drooled over since the 9000s.
UPDATE: 150k in USD for the 24 channel base model, woof! that's a lot of scratch for an SSL without the channel gates and compressors, something at this price point that offers total recall and automation really needs the dynamics. I get leaving them off of the origin since it doesn't have recall (and I don't even think you can get the origin with Ultimation, correct me if I'm wrong though), but on the oracle it would be so handy to have the option to just use the classic SSL gate and comp with instant recall of those settings and only use my outboard if I really wanted a special sound... recalling like 24 hardware compressors from recall sheets kinda defeats the purpose of this mixing system, which is perfect, instantaneous DAW style recall of analog circuits. If I still have to recall a pile of dynamics processors, then recalls will still be slow and imprecise... I guess they think we'll use plugins? Maybe for gating, but I like hardware compressors and the kind of people who would spend 150K+ on an oracle prefer analog compressors too. I'm pretty underwhelmed, great idea but as a mixer I could do without mic preamps on every channel before I sacrificed channel compressors with instant digital recall. MEH! I want those G series vca compressors on every channel before I'm willing to sell a kidney.

Is it possible to split one item into two key variations?
If you want to navigate the stormy seas of reissues, special edition reissues with exotic tolex and factory speaker upgrades, you have my blessing! I find modern fender amps baffling.
Why can't they just make the classic product line and a couple of gain bangers? Gimmee well made blackface amps. That product line was iconic and they never improved on it. I'm telling you, if I ran fender they would never have financial difficulties! Reissues would be confined to handwired tweed amps and maybe a blonde 6g6 bassman and the blackface line would be brought back in its entirety (from champ to dhowman) as modern PCB amps along with the supersonic, everything else would be discontinued. No transistor amps, digital stuff would be confined to multifx foot pedals. Cabinets would be the classic 2×10, 2×12, oversized 2×12, 1×15 with tone ring, 2×15 plus a marshall style straight 4×12 and 4×10 or 8×10 designed for modern bass. For bassists we would offer the 70s bassman100 circuit with a half power switch. Pro bass amp would be a hot rodded sunn 2000s at 200 watts. But frankly we hy bother? Ampeg owns the touring rock band market for bass... no one will ever unseat the SVT! Its look is iconic

It's a good thing for Jesse that Chuck Berry is long dead. He ate Brian Wilson's lunch, and surfin safari didn't even knock off Chuck's signature song. And god, you did not want to be keef after he touched the knobs on Chuck's twin. I assure you Chuck would cast this hobbit into the fires of mordor.
this one at least has funny lyrics, although the "moral component" part is troubling... if you don't like the philosophical field of ethics, or the application of those ideas in history and sociology, you can hardly lay that at the door of the university system, but its mostly funny:

he's like a southern, poor-man's jim boggia
https://youtu.be/x3RgkT0Ts_Y?si=Weh9HCjDHFddANDJ
check out this whole record, I wish the snare was a bit louder and the guitar (a silverface deluxe reverb thatkeeps up with any blackface, Spruce) was a little less compressed so the 5k cut better, but it's a killer

Is it possible to split one item into two key variations?
whatever makes you happy, what you're proposing is essentially the same as having a separate item for ever color strat, at least until 78/79... the amps are the same amp, I defy you to pick one from another in a blind shootout with the same speaker. I've witnessed people poopoo a blackface as a silverface it when its just has new filter caps and fresh, properly biased tubes
