Solid State vs. Tubes

I just kidna want soemthing grab and go that's not an ac4.... I liek that Ic an borrow a cab and just take this little thing and a tuner. And its not trying to sound like anything else, it just does its thing with a very interesting one knob EQ

Want to start dj

drummers make great club DJs, all my friends who spun great sets in teh rave era were drummers first

other than that DJing is not hard.... vinyl is harder but still not terribly hard unelss you're going to do stunts like scratching. You need a good pair of DJ headphones and to elarn how the mixers, decks and/or controllers work. Not complicated stuff. I've enver done modern Cd or p3 DJing, i used some denon CDJ stuff in the 90s, but that's hopelessly antiquated now... I mostly spun 12 inches and favored technics of course. The other thing you need is taste of your own and a little sense of humor and playfulness.... this is a curatorial process mainly and the creativity is mainly in addng some fects with EQ and muting to build the itnensity for dancers and more importantly its in song selection that has a sense of excitement and an occasional wink and a laugh. Or that's what I think. i ahd a buddy who opened with the 20th Century Fox fanfare and then used to always mix in the theme froms tar wars somewhere later with some minimal kick-driven techno holding down the beat udner it, dead honest. You get it.

Solid State vs. Tubes

no idea about the vipyr, never ehar dof them... I know I've never heard a peavey that sounded good other than their jazz chorus knockoff, but they're also really versatile and sound apssable for about anything.... and they're unbreakable or they used to be. It just seems like there's a lot more fish in the sea that are versatile and reliable for cheap these days. For isntance I just bought a quilter micro45 pedalbaord amp for 149 bucks shipped to ym door and have high hopes. Not sure why i did it, just curious I guess as the demoes sounded WAY better than the similr EHX pedal amps (which don't sound terrible).

Jazz guitar recomendations

i would look at epiphones liek the wildkat for the low end of youre range, especially the koa one nice dark brown and gold, there swingsters are also good and around 700 ish

I wouldn't pay 7 dollars for an epi, chinese crapfest

another one is d'angelico they run 700+ but they have some crazy good jazz guitars especially if you are willing to splurge and spend a little more tan youre budget

my friend decided after a lfietime of flirting with ajzz tog et a jazz box and take some leassons, elarn to read etc.... he got a 700 dollar entry level d'angelico single-cut full size archtop and its a nice ass guitar but I still prefer the fully hollow yamahas for some reason. They are soemtimes a bit more than 700 though. I als WAY rpefer my Yamaha SA1000 for jazz. Very ajzzy 335 style guitar.

thirdly look for used yamaha semi hollows theyre are some gems on reverb for 700 ish

YES THIS

or try a greco SA500, its an old 70s mini-335, nasically a 339/336 ;-) But old and awesome. I flirted with getting one for a while and got a good deal on one with a stop abr recently. I might sell it on for 700 bucks and if I do I will sell it to the OP, okay?

Jazz guitar recomendations

CONGRATS! some of my best musical experiences were in higschol jazzband! You will elrn a lot if you put in the effort and ask lots of questions...

I found that for a band that does some blues/funk/fusion the best guitar for the jobw as a blocked thinline like a 335. A full solid body tends to offend the band leader while most fully hollow guitars will feedback and even the bluesier charts in a abg band don't have room for controlled feedback. You wanna be in a position to play on your neck pickup at half voume until its time for a solo and ten yo'll wanna switch to a full up bridge bucker or blend the 2 picups for more fo a wes mongomery sound. The 335 platform is ideal for this. In affordable current production 335 style jazz guitars look at Eastman first, they're imrepssive for a chinese product and have really jazzy kent armstrong humbuckers in them stock that will get you the right tone for big band stuff. In old guitars look at an old Yamaha SA series.

If you think you're just going to play rhtyhm you can get away with a fully hollow guitar. Guild's starfires were always good vntage bets being thin but hollow and jazzy as fuck and I ehar the korean reissues are okay. Any fully hollow yamaha is usually a winner, there's one with P90s that's a real winner, good for rock too, the guys from QoTSA like them. Stay away from recent Epis and Ibanezes (by recent I eman post-95ish). Also, get a really good clean amp. I aways used a fender princeton reverb or an old ampeg gemini for more volume... but you can't go wrong with a Roland jazz chorus, they make a small 2x10 now or you could get an old 70s Yamaha that looks like a fender twin, those will jazz it up and like the JC120 they will double as a new wave amp for jamming out to the cure and joy division when you wanna imrpess a goth girl. Do theys till have goth girls? I guess they must. I'll report back on the quilter micro45 when I get it in the mail. It cost 149 bucks, has 3 controls and is hosues in an mxr pedal enclosure. Demoes sounded great so I bought one. All solid state.

I know, Tim Allen lied to use in the 90s when he said it was Duct tape on his sitcom

I know I'm lying when I sing Kansas's "Ducks in The Wind" ...but I just can't help myself

you said "heroic duck tape" -- that 'dcut tape thing is actually not true, its duck tape, invented during world war 2 for the army by 3M as a waterproof do-anything tape. Hence Duck Tape as a brand name. You can really use anything for ducts but if you wanna waterproof an ammo box inside and out while island hopping, expelling the japanese army from the Pacific? waterproof tape is a great option.... and you can tape ducts with it I guess

I know, Tim Allen lied to use in the 90s when he said it was Duct tape on his sitcom

all of the above... at home I have stands and wall hangers for about 9 or 10 guitars inv arious rooms -- the other 10 or 11 are in their cases. usually the most valuable ones get hung on the walls or put in cases just to protect my investment... other guitars that i maybe even like more tend to sit ons tands or lean on things, get ossed on chaires, whatever

I also have a travely multi-guitar thingy for playing shows or sessions where I need a lot ofmy guitars.... It hink it opens up ro contain 5 ot 6? and it breaks down to the size ofa fender case. I haven't used it in along time but I have it. I think I bought it when I was in this shitty barband in Washington DC before Lucian was born.

what does a Marshall non-master superlead actually sound like at volume????

Elissa,* lead singer, bad lyricist and sometimes pianist?* but not througha a 4 input marshsall, with a regular microphone and preamp. probably a shure sm7, neve and a distressor... so not related to why I posted, its kind've a shit song, the bassist's first real attempt at legit songwriting... he got better

there a a ouple tstes of top hst portly vdt, modded valve junior and an olf mgnatone now lsining back but 90% marshalls superled... som ewah and a aprt with boost I think but mustly dead dry other than the odd buffer

bass is a 63 showman through a modern SVT cab with a little sans amp RBI belnded in as DI

I'll take your word for it, I try toa void chinese products, even in non-music items! its politicl thing. I get my pickguards hand made from pickguardian.com

dude made the celluloid tort brian may pickgurd on my white strat as well as the modified LP jr on my Gibson American 2... he actually fcked up the strat guard the 1st time but replaced it for free and elt me keepthe slanted bridge pickup one so I have a spare wth vintage materials that accomodated standard trat pikcups nd birna may wiring with mini switches.... great guy

Fender Professional Jaguar questions and ideas

mexican fender sisnce th mid 90s use the same screw hols on everything as USA fender equivalent models

MIJ and CIJ is all over the map but tehy are fine guitars usually and worth measureing screw placement.

anythign else? steer clear....e ven Korean fender its only the unique mdoels thata re worth buying like the thinline, set neck P90 tele or the spalted maple tele and shit.... most of it is utter horse shit

9yabout 9 years ago

what does a Marshall non-master superlead actually sound like at volume????

okay, 90% of these guitars are straight superlead with no effects, mostly into a 90s 1960TV tall cab with 2 vintag pre-rol celestion G12m25 greeback and 2 early marshall branded 'vintage' speakers (also wenhad stock 90s slant cabs with modern leads, a 70s cab with blackbacl mueller coned G12H30s and a mea oversized recto cabinet with black shadows, but its mostly the TV cab), early vntage 30s close miced with a naked eye ribbon and an audix i5 and minimal EQ and compression downstream, just some API shit at the desk if I recall to cut 330hz and contain weird peaks.... amps were a 68 plexi superleas, modded 88 reissue with a ot rod normal channel for lead, 90s reisssue stock and a 72 purple tolex metalface superlead It was LOUD! but it made this nasty, buzzy sound. Mybe not what you are expecting... but this is it.

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

you can add a pickguard

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

so its a les paul special DC I think.... there's a tv yellow version with stock robottuner thats undesireable from a few years ago, buy it, switch to tobnepros and you are good

its doesn't have a pickguard but it has the proper caveman wrap , medium neck leaning towards slim-taper

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

and i was referring to the casino, for 335's and other centerblocks ive never had an issue

gothcha, n the fully hollow thinlines its just a question of settings, not les gain ut wise tone settings to control the feeback so you can use it musically by blocking or facing the speakers and playing into the amp for overtones and howl

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

I didn't know you could get a memphis walnut 335 without special ordering it, ood to know,he 70s had some nice colors if not guitars, I would buy a CME exclusive walnut 335 with maybe 62 specs, block inlays

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

a 70s 335? you're a followhill fan I guess, theysuck... yamaha, ibanez, greco and tokai made the best 335s from 72 til 85

how much gaina re you playing with? I never have issues with 335s though fully hollow thinlines like the casino and guild starfire I have to be judicious.... but not very

and you have a strat, just don't use the hollow body on the high gin part, go strat instead

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

also, there's the casino/330 in p90, great design, the elitist is solid as fuck.... wanna just go off track? I just gt an 80s gibson 335 dot and its a killer, the shaw buckers are open and p90ish and it can cop anything, tis syrupy and chimey at the same time on either pickup... 335s are the ultimate in versatility if you are ready to step up your game

around 2009 they made a nashcville P90 335 that's much reviled and affordable, guitar center exclusive I think and it has a tap on the p90 to cut a third of the coil and give fendery tone off it which soudns enat onthe hollow body and gibson scale

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

yea his is an 03 or 04 if i remember correcly which was a sticky transition era i want a single cut in weither brown or faded cherry tho if i cant get a cherry dc, im not fan of the crappy burst they used

yeah, you want tv yelow or white, walnut or cherry I think, the tobacco burst is meh even on vintage ones

hey, back onto firebirds, the epi j bonamasso cost me 600ish and is not a bad guitar and has a very unique tone even stock, nothing in my ollection does what it does

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

there was a faded finish non-reverse firebird a few years ago that looked sweet

9yabout 9 years ago

The Big Muff: Original, Mini, or Nano

wjat about non-reverse firebirds? theya re jazzmaster shped, SG scale/construction with P90s

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

by the way, did you know that I love guitars? well I do

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

ive seen some mij mustangs in yellow

back to gibson DCs? TV yellow is mainly available on LP jrs, only the customshop does modern tv yellow p90 equipped SGs! in the vintage era there were a few TV yellow SG jrs and specials, but maybe just a few months worth, rare! ther was also a brief mid 00s faded SG special with p90s and a shitty worn tv yellow finish, but I enver played a good one, not to snuff with the era's lp special DC in faded TV yellow

9yabout 9 years ago

Les Paul Special or P90 sg

oh does it? I have a bonamassa which is vintage correct except for the poly finish... don't usually do epi ;-)
