iZotope BreakTweaker Sale ($10 instead of $250)

https://www.izotope.com/en/shop/breaktweaker-expanded.html

I missed out on the sale just under a year ago. Just noticed it went back on sale though. Not sure how much longer it's gonna be on sale.

Also not sure if it's worth it for $250... but it's definitely worth it for $10!

A buddy of mine asked me about this plug awhile back. Just pinged him with the good news, and he scooped it up this AM. He sends his thanks.

Equipboard Improvement Ideas

I've reached out to Equipboard via email on several topics and issues with the site, all of which I'm told to go through email to address. I have yet to receive correspondence back from the administrators at Equipboard in charge of the email.

I don't have a ton of helpful insight on most of these, unfortunately, but it sucks to keep sending out thoughtful observations and feedback, and not get a response. So here it goes:

  • I've contacted about artists I've tried to submit manually not being added to the website, including Grammy-nominated artists, musicians in the bands of some of the biggest musicians in the world, artists whose bands are on the website, etc., and when I've reached out to moderators on the website about issues concerning the mechanics of adding artists manually, there have been errors on their end that have gone unresolved for months.

Bad news on this front: moderators can't add/approve artists request either, or at least I've never been unable to do so successfully since becoming a moderator. From UI on my end, it seems like this must have been possible for moderators to do at some point, maybe something is just fouled-up on my account.

  • I've reached out about fixing gear attributed to artists that are incorrect, as there's no way to remove listings or change the gear within the same listing to accurately reflect the gear that artists use.

This is a problem as old as Equipboard. I hate to lob broad generalizations w/o any data behind it, but I'm just gonna go out on a limb and say that everyone hates this aspect of gear submissions. I'm pretty sure the Admins know we all hate it, too. I'm sure EB's architects have solid reasons, but yeah, it's frustrating to botch a submission, not catch it within-the-hour and then have it sit there forever... laughing at you. It's one of the most common things I find myself explaining and re-explaining to new users... regardless of the administrative necessities that dictate this current design, the fact that you have to let you failures sit there forever comes across as counter-intuitive to more than a few of us.

  • I've reached out about becoming a moderator on the website and to potentially help facilitate some of these changes happening, or at the very least contribute in the ways moderators are capable of currently.

You've been a great contributor to this site since you joined. I think you show a lot of potential on this front, for whatever my opinion is worth.

On all of these topics (and presumably others I may be forgetting), I've gotten no response. This website is a great platform and has the potential to become much better, and it's unfortunate I've run into so many obstacles.

Well, I'm not the person you were hoping to get a response from, obviously, but I hate to see a good batch of bullet points go un-acknowledged. Thank you for all that you've done thus far to help make this place better.

trying to add this rare synth but it won't accept the link.

thanks Pauly

It won't accept the link because only Reverb landing-page links work, which are links with a "/p/" in the url. There were only something like 30 Nightshades ever made, so Reverb is never going to make a landing page for something so rare.

Opinions on Mackie Onyx mixers ?

The 5 LEDs are tolerable. I kinda want those on the desk for mic/line gain staging although a clip light for the preamp will do.

The meters on the 1640i are hardwired to show pre-fader levels only, thus my earlier comment that an overload led could suffice. All signals to its FW outs are pre-fader, so that arrangement makes sense. I hadn't considered that these newer mixerfaces can display (and even send!) both pre and post-fader levels... fancy!

Opinions on Mackie Onyx mixers ?

Having an LED per-channel to indicate overload is great, and a whole column of LEDs per channel is better still. Having to do all your metering separate screen is less desirable than having dedicated old fashioned LEDs light up on each channel -- you can see LEDs no matter how dark it is or how blind you are -- so the Zoom wins in this regard. But not having a full compliment of EQ knobs per channel strip sucks -- regardless of any menu-based EQ options, not having dedicated knobs per channel is a major PITA, big win for Model12 on that point.

A lot to unpack there but one thing I need with more than 8 channels is a meter bridge or something like it. An overload light? I would just as soon use the DAW and my ears.

Do you feel the little 5-LED mini meters on your Mackie are of any value? Or are those useless to you too? A meter bridge add-on, in the $600 mixerface market segment would be a like putting a hand-stitched Rolls Royce grade interior in a Honda Accord, no?

As for dedicated knobs? I don't care for tracking. But menu diving to mix is no fun.

I'm talking about Ajaik hearing 3 or 4 pieces of gear together for the first time, and needing to dial in a bit of a treble boost or mid cut to make things fit while they're jamming away... well before the idea of tracking or mixing even comes into play, just something to support the joy of playing with all those toys together at the same time.

I'm not exactly sure about having associated two snare drums to two artists. Have been alerted I'd have been receiving a feedback or something similar to get more hints/tips. Once a request is satisfied, do I have to remove request previously made here on this thread or shall I update the request with the URL of the new submission (or nothing)? Cheers.

You don't need to update anything as far as this thread is concerned, all anyone looks at are the most recent requests, the past is the past.

Re: your older unfulfilled requests on this thread, that you are now able to fulfill yourself, don't worry about deleting them unless you really want to.

I think I've been doing quite well adding existing Tama snare models for example, all available on sweetwater to gain score and then being further able to add/mod myself my current and past gear.

@edoardo_vittori 787?!? Congratulations! That's excellent!

Also the levels are shown on the screen rather than having an individual meter in each channel like the Zoom L12 has. I’m not sure if that’s good or bad but was wondering if anyone else can speak to that. I don’t have any personal experience to compare it against 🤷🏻‍♂️

Aria 1723TD https://reverb.com/item/24308774-aria-1723td-1974-matsumoku-japan-natural Link is not working when I use it to add the guitar. Guitar is an Aria Strat copy from about 1972. This "upgrade" to Equipboard sucks, quite frankly.

I took the time I would have spent researching this Aria submission, and spent it reviewing your submissions instead.

You're over 500 GearIQ now. Nice submissions. Left you a few notes.

Now you get to add this Aria yourself.

(please, PLEASE don't put the guitar's year or finish/color in the item name... at least try to make a submission that another person could use for an artist gear spot someday)

Opinions on Mackie Onyx mixers ?

So I mentioned I was looking at the Model 12 online and got some responses…

“ If you are self recording the big bright level meters in the Zoom will save you every time, without those big wonderful meters you will be throwing out half your sessions from too low or too high levels....or you will be squashing everything with compression. I have never had an overload on my recording sessions of live music on all 8 tracks and 24 channels of sub-mixing to the Zoom.”

And…

“ Tascam is notorius for making confusing interfaces on their mixers. A great example of that is the DP series. There's a lot of weird quirks to them you'll only know if you learn them from someone experienced in using the things. As per the record+play "issue", every single portable recorder/mixer I've seen in the wild works this way, even the Model 12. When you press record, you're arming the thing to record. This is something that's standard behavior also on DAW and tape recorders. There are several issues associated with recording straight away when pressing record that date back from analog recordings, which is why it is done that way.”

Great, but it doesn't sound like either of these strangers owns, nor has used, a Model12, specifically. And neither have Jim & I, for that matter. Maybe it's just time to find a retailer with a generous return policy and pull the trigger on one of the many good options out there? You're in The City, right? Does B&H ever put any of their pro audio stuff on the show floor for people to play with?

Why are SSL consoles/mixers so expensive? Are the PCBs sprinkled with fairy dust?

If the contacts sending you gear were all forged through EB, then all my previous assumptions are moot. I'm sorry I was so off-base on those points.

Are you saying the "no talking" style YT demos are falling out of favor, or do you still see them as dominating?

I generally prefer a no-talker over a video that takes several minutes to get down to business, but meaty, thoughtful Loopop style gear reviews are great.

4yover 4 years ago

Why are SSL consoles/mixers so expensive? Are the PCBs sprinkled with fairy dust?

It's really just a matter of getting a response. I got fed up trying to deal with these companies. It's not that I think the parent companies exert control but they're not necessarily employing musicians in the marketing dept like at say novation.

I recall you've built up relationships with some of these small/cool companies by doing development-phase testing & feedback, patch creation, etc -- which is awesome -- reflects well on both parties. But those are YOUR valuable relationships -- If you hit them up for gear to review on EB's behalf, you're cashing in some of the good will you've built up with those folks, no? And even if you yourself could get through Marketing's front door with some of these bigger folks, it just doesn't make a ton of sense to have a non-employee attempt that... that's my 2 cents, anyway.

4yover 4 years ago

Why are SSL consoles/mixers so expensive? Are the PCBs sprinkled with fairy dust?

Haha

Seriously though, dealing with a conglomerate like Tascam or Harmon (owners of soundcraft) is really admin turf.

In my experience, individual brands don't need corporate's approval to loan or comp gear for review. You need a Director-level sign-off from the Marketing department of Tascam, at most, as their parent corp TEAC absolutely does not care. You're convincing a Marketing Coordinator that Equipboard is a worthy-enough entity to justify dipping into the inventory that is set aside for such things. Someone has to print a shipping label, someone has to add the SKU to a spreadsheet and account for the approx $150-$200 expense (Tascam's cost for the Model12), and someone then has to work with Equipboard to ensure a review-outcome that is as favorable as possible to Tascam's interests. It's gonna be roughly this formula for all the products, regardless of whether or not they are part of a public entity.

I 100% agree that it's Admin territory, as sending non-employee proxies just looks terrible. And yeah, I can see how EB's social/industry footprint, relative to top YTers, might present a challenge, but you never know. To sweeten the pot, perhaps the Admins could work through a YTer that has the necessary pull? Like they sponsor a segment for a YTer or 2 to do a similar gear overview, in exchange for that YTer agreeing to pass gear onto EB so EB can develop it's own content from that same comp'd gear? Each Marketing dept. would have to agree to release the gear for the dual purpose... could get complicated... IDK.

Sorry for the late reply...

Forums = never having to say you're sorry, but I appreciate where you're coming from.

Yeah, Equipboard needs to do a shoot out and develop an objective guide, I agree. With the caveat that some if these companies can be unresponsive to non-print publications. Maybe if we were more of a YouTube influencer type of website but we just don't have that in place yet. I think we will have a hard time acquiring demo units.

Just tell them your name is Andrew Huang.

These are all from the past.

Then let's hold on adding them. Once you cross 500 GearIQ, you'll be able to add niche/discontinued/vintage items yourself.

You can build up your score most quickly by making accurate Artist Submissions. If nobody reviews your submissions after a few days, don't be afraid to add an @pkennethk comment to the submission, and I'll take a look.

If you're not interesting in participating in Artist Submissions, adding Gear Photos to your account and tagging the items shown in the pictures can also build up your score... or post reviews for all these snares and cymbals in your collection :)

What do you mean by "finally"? Users have always been allowed to add items to their own Equipboard that they don't currently own. E.g. I made a "Gearly Departed" section for my own Equipboard.

Why are SSL consoles/mixers so expensive? Are the PCBs sprinkled with fairy dust?

Earlier in the thread, you had proposed the Admins do a mixerface buyer's guide that covered everything from stuff that goes for a few hundred, all the way up to the SSL BigSix. I like that idea.

It seems like the mixerface category has grown to the point where a buyer's guide would be handy for the internet to have... and since most buyer's guides out there don't differentiate between mixers and mixerfaces, it might be a real opportunity to put something unique out there.

Your thoughts?
