Jupiter and Juno Squad assemble!

Someone needs to do a 1:1 analog replica Jupiter 8. Too nice of a synth to only be available for $15k and up.

I would kickstarter at least a grand for that

Me too... but, more realistically, we're probably just going to end up giving Behringer $1500 for a clone that's not 1:1, but closer than anything else out there.

Great roland-head and proud JX-8P owner here.

Excellent!

My dream synths are the Jupiter 8 and the Jupiter 6 😍

Thought the OB6 was fried on Monday, bout lost my shit. Had moved it to a temporary spot & it was off its regular surge protector & I forgot. Freaked the fuck out

but it's ok after all, yes?

Would Sequential even attempt a repair on something like that, or is it a tragic "for parts" case if that happens? I have no idea how serviceable these modern analog polys are for anything beyond finding and fixing common single points of failure. Would home/apartment insurance cover something like that? This is making me queasy just thinking about it.

Shit is unhinged over here in PDX. 1/3 of the city w/o power, roads are closed due to downed trees EVERYWHERE, etc. Not as bad as Texas fer sure but properly fucked none the less.

Portland is getting this @#$% too?!? I'm sorry to hear it, xaqary.

This is when you pat yourself for never sliding on redundant back ups.

+1 pats from me too. I slide way too much.

Jay Turser Custom Shop how good are guitars?

I've never tried one myself, but a musician I knew through close friends, who was always critical of every guitar maker when we discussed the topic, someone who had played guitar and bass professionally with well-known acts since the 1960s, and owned many classic pre-CBS and custom shop Fenders, was very impressed by the standard JT products and even opted to play them at gigs on occasion.

The point of buying an expensive guitar?

and can you do me a solid and keep the guitar posts in 'guitar & bass' please? Thanks in advance my dude.

oh no... Gchairen has referred to me as "my dude" or "my man" on a few of his replies to may random comments... is this some kind of internal code you guys use for "flag this weirdo"?

I've got a couple of guys I'm real tight with who look out for me in all things when needed for not a lot of money.

Glad to hear this.

I'm doing business at a real circle of friends level right now or I'm charging up front, too. I need some recent stuff on my reel and if someone I like makes something I really like I could be talked into doing it just for the credit.

Totally get that, you need a current CV to be able to start charging what you're worth... just so long as folks know they are getting services worth at least $300/track for practically free.

The way I see it, it's 2031, and your services are now worth $1000/track (equivalent of $800/track in todays dollars)... because you seem to have the talent, experience, and personality needed to get to that point... so all my little questions/comments are coming from that place, that you're going to get there, and that the this stage where you're doing pro bono work or charging $100-$300/track is just a temporary, but necessary, phase in the process.

my thought is to make it a shared patreon until the bill is paid

10-4, sounds viable so long as client is contractually bound to communicate and play nice with you for as long as it takes. Out of curiosity, does Patreon have explicit features and functions to support that kind of setup? If not, it's a killer idea for someone to tap into.

HELP!!! What's everyone with a decent sized analog mixing board doing for a stand?

Team Zimmer does what it does very well, and I think for Chris Nolan, especially, they deliver exactly what is wanted by their employer and then some. I'm one of those people that had a great time seeing Interstellar in the theater, no issues with volume or dialog mix... and a mid-80s Silvestri theme wouldn't have been a fit for a movie like that, obviously. If mass-audience movies still needed clear, memorable themes, that were hummable by average folks, I am confident Team Zimmer could deliver... I just don't think there is a priority placed on crafting films in a way that could support such a thing... and given how much money movies were making without them (in the last of the before-times) I doubt many are going to course correct for the sake of good themes.

Per our fanboy praise of HBO's Watchmen last week, maybe serialized prestige shows, with their thinner FX budgets and more breathable pacing, are the new playground for tying characters to earworms?

HELP!!! What's everyone with a decent sized analog mixing board doing for a stand?

last really, really interesting score was Fight Club I guess...

Oh I think there are plenty of scores in the last 20 years that I'd consider really interesting, and there is certainly no shortage of talented composers working today... I'm just a child of the 80s and I miss the clear, memorable, hummable themes that became inseparable from the stories and characters they supported. Then again, maybe the themes of the Harry Potter and Avengers movies* are just as memorable to kids who grew up with them as Jaws, Star Wars, Superman The Movie, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and Back to the Future were to me, and "great" is just whatever makes a good impression on you when you're 8 years old... but at this point I'd kill for a movie with yet another recycled batch of John Barry themes... I mean, that dude turned in fairly identical scores for King King, Out of Africa, and Dances with Wolves (over 3 different decades!) and I still think it all works, because they're good themes, and there is enough breathing room in the scenes they support to allow for some actual music.

*I chose those 2 specifically because they're also Williams and Silvestri, my point isn't that the talent pool has gotten worse... just that there is so much loud crazy @&#% going on in "fun" movies now... there's just less room for music to do its job.

HELP!!! What's everyone with a decent sized analog mixing board doing for a stand?

there was a period there where everything had a sound but somehow everything but John Hughes movies was still really unique. Like Bucaroo Bonzai could not be mistaken for Blade Runner which is not the Eurythmics soundtrck for 1984, and yet....

One could still bring a distinctive film score to market in the 80s. I don't doubt the theory that a bajillion tracks of booming SFX, and NLE stations that emboldened every person on the production team to nitpick the edits have eroded one's ability to become the next John Williams.

If someone will pay upfront or has cool gear I want then its on, of course. But this back end social media thing is my way forward in the future and will solve the problem where guys won't pay me for a year and just release the roughs! Although I solved that by adding white noise to a spot in almost finsihed mixes. I ahte when stuff I wasn't done gets put out there. Its not just compensation.

...but isn't your profit then tied to their social media prowess AND their integrity in staying honest re: income made from social media? What's their incentive to be honest re: how successful they are on Patreon over the coming years?

I thought you were setting me up... I'm not far but I venture into Pensatucky with great caution.

How awesome would that be if I was like "Take the 30 to Lancaster county, hide your car at first underpass and walk 'til you see the first 2-story farmhouse... you'll be raising a barn and milking cows all weekend, but Eli will build you a desk that will survive your great grandchildren"?

I'm out of depth on this one, but you used 3 exclamation points... so I have a moral obligation to try. I did some searching yesterday... man, the options suck. I see what you mean.

Seems like it's one of these 3:

  1. Folding metal "Z style" stand that magically happens to be deep enough to hold the mixer securely. I've seen a few of these that appear to be Soundcraft-branded and appropriately-sized, but nothing for sale. Can't even find a SKU#.

  2. Used custom studio furniture from Craigslist that just happens to be a lucky fit.

  3. Actual custom studio furniture... which will probably set you back more than the Soundcraft itself.

... how close are you to the skilled woodworkers of PA's Amish country?

potential bug: "Show more" button on Gear Photos filter not working

  1. Log in
  2. Select "Gear Photos" filter for your recent activity feed
  3. Scroll to bottom of page, click "Show more"

Result: More photos never load. Process spinner spins indefinitely.

  • OSX 10.15.7

  • Safari Version 14.0.3 (15610.4.3.1.6, 15610)

Update: on further inspection, this is happening for "Show more" in Recent Activity feed, regardless of filter setting.

Modular Eurorack for Ambient Sounds?

...Mutable Instruments, Erica Synths, and there's one other company, can't remember their name off the top of my head...

Make Noise? Everybody seems to love Make Noise.

Mutable stuff always rises to the top; Olivier is one of the more generous geniuses out there... plus he puts little wooden toys in each box (I @##% you not)... and stickers! They all give you stickers. The dream of the 90s is still alive in eurorack land.

Again, sorry for the absence, this go it's been intensive job hunting on top of the physical therapy--I'm hoping I landed the new job, which'll give me a solid 8-10 hours a day of home-time to renovate the studio and record.

My fingers are crossed for ya, man... especially since it sounds like crossing your own might be rough right now.

And the only reason I'm managing to understand any of this is because you lot are very good at explaining it, and once I read over the posts a few times, it makes it through my idiot over developed lizard brain!

Don't be so hard on yourself. How quickly one groks all this obscure over-complified niche tech is more a measure of patience and available spare time than intelligence.

iZotope & Plugin Boutique are running crazy sales... again!

thanks Arhum. much appreciated.

I was chatting with a new EB member the other day, asking what synth they used for a bass on one of their SoundCloud tracks... turns out it was Iris 2... and I was like "why does that sound familiar?"... logged into my Plugin Boutique account just now, and there it is, waiting for me to download and install from back when you gave us all the hot tip. Cheers!

Best Epiphones and Squiers

Also, in case you haven't already, try searching Equipboard for different Epiphones and Squier models to see which ones are confirmed to be used by artists more or less making a good living from music.

off top of my head:

Josh Homme

Ezra Koenig

Joe Dart

The postings may or may not give you some clues at to which era their Epiphone or Squier is from, but it's a start.

me and my friends are crushed... I found out thru Phil of Rough House records fame.... my best friend was just saying how frail he was last night :-(

:( 100% understandable.

If it's any consolation*, my grandma is that age and doing amazing, all things considered. 100% still all there, mentally. We talk a lot about what it feels like to be in your mid 90s... and I think about the indignities of aging and death waaaayyyy too much... long story short, everyone's journey is different, but nobody in their 90s is wishing they could keep being in their 90s forever... especially if you're still able to remember what it was like to be a lot younger.

Knowing this doesn't make it any easier for those of us left behind though.

*In no way am I trying to suggest how anyone should feel about this news or how they should grieve... just sharing the outlook of the nonagenarian in my life.

I'm glad.... just a heads up, HBO Max also has a lot of Kirosawa movie and all 3 Hanzo movies!

I've been mowing through the Kurosawas I haven't seen for months on HBOMax... it's a great tip. Was afraid a good chunk of Kurosawa's library was never going to be platform-streamable again after that service that had the Criterion collection when under. HBOMax has the best collection of old classics by far.
