Equipboard History Question

I mean, yeah, that's pretty much it! If you want to know from a business standpoint, I have no doubt you could launch WhatIskKimKardashianWearingToday dot com, update it with every TMZ photo that comes out of her, and possibly make a buck or two. But to achieve scale, you need to attract a community that is passionate and will talk about a subject for the love.

Well said. :D

With no disrespect to any celebrities past or present, I don't think the lifetime customer value calcs for WIKKWT.com would be very appealing.

There are people that still want to know what kind of MPC, DAW, monitors, console and mics Missy Elliott and Timbaland used on "The Rain (Supa Dupa Fly)" 24 years ago... but good luck finding someone who still cares about what brand of lipstick she wore in that's song's video...

Equipboard History Question

Good question. I remember finding similar early-days mission statements years back... I've always trusted that post-launch hard data + anecdotal evidence steered the micro-pivot/intensified focus... but I too am curious how that all played out in reality... though how much of that the co-founders can/should share publicly, I don't know.

Looks like a Fender Precision Bass to me.

I'll second that. Looks like either a Fender or Squier Precision Bass.

The Hello-Thread: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself πŸ‘‹

I have a friend who worked for Nintendo on a major title who now lives in Kyoto. He was showing off his Pro 3 on FB... so now Im saving up for a PolyBrute :-)

Ha! Is that how that works? Does a PolyBrute trump a Pro3?

Do you use any DAWs ajaik, or are you pure hardware?

The Hello-Thread: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself πŸ‘‹

I wish I had worked in the gaming industry (though Im not sure I would be making as much money and be able to buy as much nice synth gear :-)

No you don't, for exactly the reason you just pointed out. Not once have I considered going back into the mainstream of that industry :)

Modular Eurorack for Ambient Sounds?

Thanks for checking in Solusash. No worries at all. Glad to hear you're on the mend. Hang in there through the hand therapy, I know that can be rough.

5yover 5 years ago

What’s the best way to show your band mates your songs?

All on paper, there is nothing personal about. I just don’t know how to show them.

If it's on paper... show them the paper?... or a picture of the paper?

Does anyone in the band read music?

That was outstanding monochrome, many thanks!

Modular Eurorack for Ambient Sounds?

Your definition of ambient vibes is very similar to mine, solusash :)

I've been thinking on this for last few days... there is a lot to unpack here.

I don't have it on my EB, but I do also have a non-trivial amount of $$$ invested in Eurorack gear... it's just on loan to a friend and only about half of the module are in the EB database, so I'm just sort of ignoring it for now.

I'd be shocked if any of the pad tones in that chillwave mix were made with eurorack, and the second vid is explicitly software.

but, dreamy ambience can still be achieved in eurorack, of course, it's just that this type of soundscape isn't necessarily this format's bread and butter. The biggest limiting factor is polyphony, as eurorack is a largely-monophonic endeavor, as I'm sure you're aware.

Some examples of what you can do with several thousands of dollars in Eurorack modules:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pfw_9hCOE80&feature=emb_logo

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFY0JbwrPlE&feature=emb_logo

In the first link, pads are coming from the Qu-bit Chord module. In the second, the pads are coming from external hardware and being processed by Euro.

I own the Qu-Bit chords module. It's one of the very few modules that can spit out 4 voices arranged into chords on its own, but I wouldn't want to have to rely on this as my only source of synth chords. Needless to say, it doesn't sound like it does in the video on its own, the Chords signal is going through a number of modules in that example.

Now here's what you can do for $600 US with a single Korg WaveState, or any similar wavetable synth that wasn't designed to be as rough-sounding as possible:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qOEef6llcgc

What about going with a desktop/standalone hardware synth as your primary sound source, to get true polyphony and patch storage, and utilizing as small Eurorack setup as an FX processor loaded with fun stuff like Mutable Instruments Clouds and Strymon Magneto?

Can you tell us a little more about the sounds you want? Can you link us to any songs/videos for sonic examples? One persons ambient heaven is another's atonal drone nightmare. Help us help you :)

The Hello-Thread: Please Allow Me To Introduce Myself πŸ‘‹

Oh and I also collect retro computers and gaming hardware - I wish there was something like Equipboard for that stuff.

Welcome! great bio :)

I'm a big retro game nerd myself, I worked in that industry for a few years (nothing exciting), and still have friends that are knee-deep in the retro gaming lifestyle. Question: to state the obvious, the musical instrument (MI) industry works a lot like the fashion industry: what successful/respected artists are known to use drives so much of the decision making, for better or worse.... but in the retrogaming world, there isn't the same dynamic, of course... one could log the gear Toby Fox used to make Undertale, or the dev kits used for Metal Gear Solid... but it's just not the same... the focus of a VG-hardware/software Equipboard would just be a different beast. Once a gamer has created their Equipboard, complete with gaming chair, monitor, MIB SNES Mini, copy of Earthbound, Atomiswave-modded Dreamcast, etc... then what? What else would there be to do? I'm not asking rhetorically, just trying to get the ball rolling...

Might be an MIJ Squier Bullet, like the one from this thread:

https://www.tdpri.com/threads/mij-85-squier-stratocaster-no-middle-pup.445698/

That squire is linked in my earlier post, so I agree to a degree, but those all those 2-pickup Squier Strats documented online are straight-plug, not a slant-jack to be seen...

If someone was going to mod a guitar, putting on a 2-pickup pickguard to cover the middle slot is much less involved than routing the body and rewiring to accommodate a slanted jack.

5yover 5 years ago

https://youtu.be/ARwjaSxtwzo

Looks to me like like a Fender Lead II. The body and headstock look Fender-ish, although I can't see if the Fender logo is on the headstock. The Lead II is the only fender guitar that I can think of that resembles a strat, but with two single coil pickups (which, in the video, appear to be slanted, just like on a Lead II).

I had the same thought initially: one of the forgotten Fender models of years past...

...but 2 details:

*1. This artist's guitar has a slanted plug jack, whereas every non-Strat Fender I've ever seen has a straight plug, including the Lead I and II

*2. Only the bottom pickup is slanted, whereas the Lead II had a slant on both

My current working theory is that this is an MIJ short scale strat (24") as many of those had slightly smaller Strat-shaped bodies and only 2 knobs, instead of the standard 3. Here's a vintage Japanese example, and a more recent example.

That still doesn't explain the missing middle pickup, but there were some rare examples of MIJ Strats with only 2 pickups, but only with straight plugs... hmmm.

It could also be a strat knock off... as we all know there are like 4 fake strats for every real one.

Hello can you tell me what kind of guitar the guy on the left has?

^ i know, i just say that because the SG gothic epiphone is similar to the look, and some people who dont really know brands and models can think is the same guitar :)

Hey, if they bother to track down a 17 year old special edition guitar, but can't be bothered with whether it's a Gibson or an Epiphone... there's no helping 'em at that point. :D

(but it's a fair point you make, I'm just being a jerk and pretending a ";)" makes it OK... ignore me)

Before we get into this, why don't you take a moment to thank the people that chipped in on your previous thread, and log that SG Gothic to whoever that artist was?

Hello can you tell me what kind of guitar the guy on the left has?

yes it's a Gibson SG Gothic (Not an Epiphone)

Yes, that's why the headstock says "Gibson" on it. ;)

Honestly, I’m not all that sure. I’m not much of a rib person. We don’t have a shortage of barbecue places though!

No worries. I have omnivore friends who can't bear the thought of eating meat of the bone, in addition to my vedge-edge folks. :)

Questions On Keyboard Prices

What about build-in speakers? You and I are trained to dismiss anything that can make noises without an amp as non-pro, but if you don't already own a keyboard amp, and don't want to be limited to headphones exclusively, it can be nice...

I mentioned the kawai I bought my kid because it has this cool bose-like speaker array and wave chamber in the back that really projects and diffuses the sound like an actual piano. At max amp volume the on board system is about the loudness of an upright piano across the velocity spectrum... well, that ad the action. Best hammer action out there. Beats the feel of expensive offerings from roland, korg and even clavia's nord piano! Easily as good as dexibell.

perfect.

Hi! Just joined up today. I found this site while researching the Yamaha GX-1.

Anyways, I’m an improvisational electronic noisemaker from Memphis, TN. I am obsessed with sounds and finding ways to make them into what I call for performative purposes: music.

Happy to be here!

Right on. Welcome! You've got a nice mix of newer analog and classy 80s/90s gear on your board. Respect. :)

I've only ever been to Franklin, TN (business trip long ago). When I finally get to Memphis, where do I get some good ribs?

Greetings! I'm Moe Vargas. Bass player in Puerto Rico since 1993. I like to play and listen to almost any type of music but I prefer: Rock, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Reggae, Funk, Salsa and a lot more. Let's have a great time!

Welcome! How'd you find out about Equipboard?

My first successful band 'The Reels' (1978-1987) in the early days used Rolands and Korgs. If you check out youtube and search for 'The Reels' Quasimodos Dream Album you can hear the arrangements, quite complex for pop. :) Such a quirky 80s band its a shame the world didn't get to experience them live.

I've been listening to The Reels all morning (on Spotify no less, so get ready for several small fractions of a penny in your mailbox!)... you don't need an American nobody to tell you this, but you guys were (are) the real deal. I'm shocked that The Reels weren't on my radar previously, given my lifetime obsession with late 70s/early 80s music and college radio, but I'm delighted to find this rich vein of new (to me) wave.

My favorites so far are No. 3, Science is Golden, and pretty much the entire early eponymous record

Honored to have you here Mr. Abrahams!

I see you're a keyboard player? If you are into old analog synths. My first successful band 'The Reels' (1978-1987) in the early days used Rolands and Korgs. keyboard owner... I don't think I've quite got the chops yet to count as a "player" by my own standards. :D

I'm looking forward to checking out 'The Reels'!

Thank you for such a detailed answer! Those I know who have had professional playing careers always start and end their evaluation of different basses with weight, so that totally scans. :) I hear the American Fenders of the last few years (the Ps and Js at least) have started to creep back up in weight... but damn do they look nice!

Questions On Keyboard Prices

Okay, I don't think I'll be doing this for Christmas (especially not now) I might do this for his birthday though, so I might bring this back up in Springtime.

and I'll still say Kawai ES110. I have not been this impressed with a sub-$1000 digital piano.... ever

What about build-in speakers? You and I are trained to dismiss anything that can make noises without an amp as non-pro, but if you don't already own a keyboard amp, and don't want to be limited to headphones exclusively, it can be nice... The only reason I own a Reface CP is because of the size and the built-in speakers... it's my couch piano.

Hi from Sydney Australia, oh yet another forum for gear heads. What do you do when you are in between GAS? Come to a forum :) On Electric bass since the 70's and upright bass 5 years ago. I play in a few original acoustic bands that mix genres; country, pop, rock, bluegrass when I'm not doing that I'm writing and recording original Indie Rock.

69 Fahrenheit & cloudy in Sydney today. Not exactly the sunny Christmas day y'all were hoping for, but I'm sure you've had worse. Welcome!

If you've been playing since the 70's, what's your opinion on the best decade for electric bass guitars? Many think that instrument quality took a dive in the 70s and 80s, and has been steadily improving since... but what's your take?

Christmastime Plugin Freebies!

I scored that Arturia chorus a few days ago, but haven't had a chance to test it out vs. TAL's awesome free Juno chorus. I expect great things, though.

Thank you for the BPB mega list, that is outstanding!

Clifford, if you just wanted something that your brother could plug into his MacBook and trigger sounds from Garageband, my apologies. I assumed you were looking for an instrument that could make sounds on its own, not just a USB controller.

Wait no, I was looking for somthing that could produce it's own sound.

There’s a much cheaper, but quality MIDI keyboard you can get on Amazon. Look up midiPlus.

Pardon my ignorance, but does MidiPlus make anything that actually makes sounds? Clifford needs something that is a self-contained instrument, AFAIK.
