Art Resnick's Gear

Art Resnick played a Baldwin Electric Harpsichord with The New Salvation Army Banned (soon shortened to “Salvation”) at the KFRC Fantasy Fair & Magic Mountain Music Festival on Mt. Tamalpais in June 1967. The harpsichord’s front two legs were removed so it could be placed on top of a Vox Continental organ, while the lone back leg remained.

This unique set up can be partially seen in the photo above. Resnick is out of view to the right. A home movie clip filmed at the event (in color, without sound) can also be viewed here.

This is one of only a handful of known instances where a Baldwin Electric Harpsichord was played live in concert, as the instrument was much more commonly used by bands in the studio.

In this screenshot from a home movie clip, Art Resnick can be seen playing a Vox Continental with The New Salvation Army Banned (soon shortened to "Salvation") at the KFRC Fantasy Fair & Magic Mountain Music Festival on Mt. Tamalpais in June 1967. The full home video can be viewed here (unfortunately, without sound). Resting atop the Vox organ is a Baldwin Electric Harpsichord, making for a very unusual touring rig.

The organ can be identified by its Z-shaped stand in the background of two additional photos on Getty Images: here and here.

This photo from the back of Salvation’s eponymous debut album shows Art Resnick (middle) and the rest of the band huddled behind an RMI keyboard. Resnick was credited on the album under the name “U.S. of Arthur.”

This three-tiered case design was typical of both the RMI Explorer and the Rocksichord. I believe it’s more likely that the pictured keyboard was a Rocksichord given Resnick was credited with playing “organ & harpsichord” on the record. Additionally, the keyboard sounds on songs like “Love Comes in Funny Packages” match the sound of the Rocksichord.
