Bill Cunningham
Bill Cunningham's Gear
In the video, Bill Cunningham (left) is seen with a Gibson SG style bass. There is still unclear information of the bass' origin and its presence currently, but it is known that Bill owned the bass and used it in some performances during his time with the Box Tops
In the present era, Bill Cunningham is still touring with the Box Tops, but sadly without Alex Chilton. Bill's instrument choice is a Fender Precision Bass, strung with Roundwounds (based on the sound from that video). This bass may have been either a reissue or an original.
In the video, Bill is located on the left-hand corner, where he is playing keys. It seemed that Bill was playing keyboard before he moved to the electric bass. In the video, he is seen playing a Hammond B3 Organ. There is a section where you can see Gary Talley's hand on the organ, just as a joke since it is mimed to a backing tape.
This photo shows Bill Cunningham (almost hidden) playing a Vox Continental with the Box Tops. Before Bill played bass for the band, he played organ and piano. The whereabouts of that organ are unknown.
In the well-known promotional video of The Letter, Bill Cunningham can be seen on the right, beside the organ. He is seen to be playing a Fender Telecaster, with no strap (probably balanced on his leg). This may be the only time we get to see Bill Cunningham play this Telecaster with The Box Tops, as the lineup of the band changes occasionally.
