D.A.F.'s Gear
Per their interview with Redbull Music Academy, early/founding D.A.F. member & producer Kurt Dahlke says:
"At that time I had an MS-20 and a SQ10 sequencer and a rhythm box and an organ and a Logan String Orchestra – and I wanted to expand the possibilities."
Additionally, given the technology available at the time, the SQ-10 is the simplest explanation for the crude, robotic sequences early D.A.F. tracks are known for.
This interview with the Quietus mentions their use of MS-20, as do many many other publications over the last 40 years.
"The 'Der Mussolini' single provoked a media-fuelled public debate on the limits of freedom of speech. On the other hand, the Korg MS-20 driven productions of the band convinced John Peel to call them the grandfathers of techno."
On Arp's own website, Engineer Ryota Hayashida recounts the provenance of D.A.F.'s Arp Odyssey Rev 2 (from Conny Plank, no less) and recreates the bassline from Der Mussolini:
"They were encouraged to use the ARP Odyssey by their producer, Conny Plank, through a bass amp, adding to the signature tone. The key to achieving this sound is to apply a very small amount of detune to the two VCOs, and add some of the overtones from the RING MOD circuit. High-pass filter is also applied. Some of you may be wondering why I would use a high-pass filter when I want a thick-sounding synth bass, but you should try using it aggressively to get the sound you want. Depeche Mode was also fond of this type of synth bass and used it frequently on their earlier material."
In the official video "Erste DAF Probe" by groenlandrecords, Gabi Delgado-López of D.A.F. is seen playing the Dubreq Stylophone S2 analogue synthesizer. This aligns with mentions of his regular use of the instrument, as noted on the D.A.F. Wikipedia page.
Gabi Delgado-López of D.A.F. used the Dubreq Stylophone S-1 Retro Pocket Synth at a very early stage, as documented by André Boße in the article "DAF: Wie Robert Görl und Gabi Delgado der Elektro-Musik ein neues Gesicht gaben" published by Musikexpress.
