Hound Dog Taylor's Gear
Hound Dog Taylor was known for using a 4-pickup Kawai S180 electric guitar, a model inspired by the Firebird design. This guitar can be seen on the cover of his first album. Taylor also had a Kingston 4-pickup guitar from around 1968 and a Teisco surf guitar. His gear is currently owned by Bruce Iglauer. A friend of mine had the opportunity to try out Taylor's S180 at Iglauer's place and found it impressive. The Kawai S180, particularly the 1964 version, is a remarkable slide guitar with great sustain and tone, despite its less reliable tuners.
Hound Dog Taylor was known to play a Teisco Spectrum 5, as seen in a user-uploaded photo on Iinet.
The picture displayed at 0:23 in this youtube video (taken by Wes Race) clearly shows Taylor plugged in to a Fender Quad Reverb.
